Do big companies like Google and Amazon fire developers for buggy releases?

Software development in large tech companies isn’t all goody good and creative as it looks from the outside, there is a lot of bad politics, proxy wars and turf wars being played between the developers, testers, designers and project managers. The situation needs to be handled with tact and diplomacy because only S knows the internals of that particular module and if he refuses to fix the bug, the entire project will be held responsible for the failure. S gets all the better appraisals and other goodies for fixing that one single bug and the whole cycle continues with the next release.

Huawei has trademarked its ‘Hongmeng’ operating system

Chinese telecom giant Huawei has registered a trademark for its homegrown operating system (OS) “Hongmeng,” a confirmation of the company’s longtime efforts to achieve technological self-reliance. This comes as Google cut off Huawei devices from its Android OS following a U.S. order banning the sale of American software and components to the company. The new OS, which is being tested, will be used as a universal operating system for multiple platforms including smartphone, computer, tablet, TV, cars, and smart wearable devices, Global Times reported, citing Richard Yu.

No, Night Owls Aren’t Doomed to Die Early

None of the experts we spoke with suggested that people with owl schedules who get restful sleep each night, eat a healthy diet, exercise, form meaningful social connections and get some sunlight each day were at significant risk of an overall decline in their general health, or an early death, based solely on their sleep schedule. A 1942 Gallup poll reported that only 3 percent of Americans slept fewer than five hours a night, with most households averaging 7.9 hours. This time, those sleeping fewer than five hours a night had ballooned to 14 percent.

How Phonies and self-promoters came to rule the world

How Phonies and self-promoters came to rule the world

Almost immediately, reporters revealed such a close relationship between Boeing and the Federal Aviation Authority that Boeing’s own people had virtually done the FAA safety certification of the new aircraft. Entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes raised $US900m before being indicted for fraud and conspiracy.Credit:AAP
One of the the most astonishing stories of deception of recent times is that of Elizabeth Holmes, a Stanford University dropout who raised $US900 million for a Silicon Valley company, Theranos, based on shoddy blood-testing science that ended up risking the lives of both patients and healthy people. But almost as repellent is the roll-call of powerful and wealthy people, especially older men, who, apparently blinded by Holmes’s looks, fake science and confidence, took board positions, invested in Theranos, or both, often, according to news reports, without audited financial statements.

The low-down on home routers – how to buy, what to avoid

The low-down on home routers – how to buy, what to avoid

If I needed a new router today (I don’t, I have a couple of cold spares) I’d trawl e-Bay for a one-generation-back commodity router on the OpenWRT support list that does have 4GB+ flash and 32GB+RAM and doesn’t have a &$@*$! Cisco is an exception to this pattern, but only in the commercial-grade hardware they sell to data centers – their SOHO routers are cheap flank guards for the upper end of their range, built on the same reference designs as RandomRouterCo’s. I can tell both things by noticing that all the Cisco and Ubiquiti stuff on the OpenWRT support list uses a handful of generic images.

Stronger than aluminum, a heavily altered wood cools passively

Stronger than aluminum, a heavily altered wood cools passively

This ultimately makes the material much stronger than wood (though the researchers don’t compare its strength to that of pressure-treated lumber, which is also stronger than untreated wood). As a result, the material is really bad at absorbing sunlight, and thus it doesn’t capture the heat in the same way regular wood does. The researchers estimate that covering an apartment building with the treated wood could save about 35 percent of the energy used for cooling.

Apple’s WebKit team proposes a way ads can be measured while maintaining privacy

The proposal is called Privacy Preserving Ad Click Attribution For the Web and its available for testing as an experimental feature in Safari Technology Preview 82+. The store web page would request a tracking pixel from Google to report back user interactions, in order to attribute the purchase to the search ad. One step forward and one step back for Apple’s privacy campaign with latest Safari build

However, given recent political interest in revisiting ad tracking limitations, there’s a chance regulators may get behind Apple’s proposal.

Show HN: Sourcetrail – Visual Source Explorer Now Supports Python

Every line in the source code has a purpose and as software developers, we spend most of your time searching for those small pieces that are currently relevant. Sure, every developer has their own strategy of finding information within source code, from searching documentation to looking at tests, or asking the original authors when available. It knows what paradigms exist and because it’s turning your source code into executable instructions; it knows every single piece of information within the entire codebase, including: where functions are called, how types get instantiated, where variables get changed.

China unveils 600km/h maglev train prototype

China unveils 600km/h maglev train prototype

On Thursday, the body prototype for the country’s latest high-speed magnetic-levitation (maglev) train project rolled off the assembly line in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao. “Take Beijing to Shanghai as an example — counting preparation time for the journey, it takes about 4.5 hours by plane, about 5.5 hours by high-speed rail, and [would only take] about 3.5 hours with [the new] high-speed maglev,” said CRRC deputy chief engineer Ding Sansan, head of the train’s research and development team, in a statement. After nearly three years of technical research, Ding said the team had developed a lightweight and high-strength train body that lays the technical foundation for the development of five sets of maglev engineering prototypes.
