Smartphones Are Toys First, Tools Second

Smartphones Are Toys First, Tools Second

It would simply seem too good to be true—an affordable, pocket-sized device that provides:

These are just a few basic smartphone functions, but to your new friends, they would all sound like life-changing superpowers. The smartphone should be, and perhaps still could be, the most personally empowering device ever invented, yet many people are now trying to reduce or eliminate their role in their lives. Even when I unlock my phone for a decidedly empowering use—looking up a fact, entering something in my calendar—it’s unlikely I won’t also tap on Instagram, and maybe Pocket, Yahoo Sports, or whatever other icons pull the eye in that moment.

Static Web – Back to the Roots

Static Web – Back to the Roots

While WordPress was getting fatter and fatter, alternatives developed both to host website and format content. In the meantime, it’s super easy to beat a bloated dynamic website at the SEO-game using a static one: now is the time to play! Hugo was a fit for our tech blog as it helped us streamline the content editing process while achieving impressive organic results:

Luckily, the offer of static website generators and other related services greatly expanded since the release of Jekyll in 2008.

Combining finances

Combining finances

The approach we landed on, and the one I’d personally recommend, is very similar to the “what’s mine is yours” approach detailed above with one small twist: each person gets a monthly allocation, or “fun money salary,” for their own personal pleasure. You can agree on your own set of customs for how you use the money, but my wife and I have agreed that the only expenses we spend our fun money on are:

The allocations can easily be adjusted to account for how similar your spending styles are: if you and your partner have similar approaches to money or lead strongly overlapping lives, the fun money salary can be very low; if you and your partner have dissimilar approaches to money or lead independent lives, you can give yourselves a larger fun money salary. Both partners have equal access to it, and both partners will continue to receive the same monthly allocation for fun money no matter how much each person makes.

Murray Gell-Mann Has Died

Murray Gell-Mann Has Died

Murray resisted, and they settled on physics as a compromise — “to please the old man,” Dr. Gell-Mann said — and he soon found that the subject fascinated him. After Dr. Gell-Mann earned his doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in 1951, J. Robert Oppenheimer, who had directed the Manhattan Project, brought him to the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J. From there he went to the University of Chicago and worked under Enrico Fermi. Dr. Gell-Mann showed that this behavior could be explained by positing a new physical quality that he named “strangeness.”

Ask HN: Do you keep a personal knowledge repository?

Ask HN: Do you keep a personal knowledge repository?

I’m fascinated by storing things that I learn outside of my own brain. Ideally I’d love to create my own mini intranet of information, basically a personal wiki, that I can go to first before having to Google things, especially for my field of study. I’ve looked into various Wiki packages but none quite seem to offer what I’m looking for (Mac, no need for a webserver, cross device functionality, math markup, searchability, tags) If you do keep a personal knowledge repository, can you please describe your workflow for using and maintaining one for all the new knowledge you acquire?

Beta: Tool for a Linguist

Beta: Tool for a Linguist

Beta rule grammars may be written to perform various kinds of tasks, including data conversion, extracting interesting examples out of text data, modelling morphological structures or processes and selecting correct readings of ambiguous word tokens and parsing surface syntactic structures of sentences. If the user has problems in giving the names of the rule grammar files and input files required by Python Beta, one can ask it for help:

By default, input units are word tokens separated by blank space. If one wants, for example, to extract all instances of a pattern, one must take account also of all such cases, where the search string is surrounded by one or two punctuation marks or special characters, such as:

Word tokens may be identified by using suitable Beta rules and definitions.

The Lingua Franca of LaTeX

The typesetter that understands these commands is the TeX engine itself, which reads the author’s manuscript and produces a file that can be sent directly to a printer to produce typeset documents. Because TeX’s plain set of commands is fairly low-level, its best suited for authors who, like Knuth, desire detailed control over the typesetting of their material. Because the TeX typesetting engine was developed before digital formats for typefaces had been standardized, Knuth had to invent his own format for font files; design a set of font families, Computer Modern; and invent his own typeface design program, Metafont.
