Lightening run-time code generation

Lightening run-time code generation

Then I looked in the source code to see architecture support and was pleasantly surprised to see MIPS, POWER, and so on, so I went with GNU Lightning for Guile in our 2.9.1 release last October. When I chose GNU Lightning, I had in mind that it was a very simple library to cheaply write machine code into buffers. But if you can only afford one emitter of JIT code for all architectures, you need simple C, you don’t need register allocation, you want a simple library to just include in your source code, and you are good with the LGPL, then Lightening could be a thing for you.

What’s the difference between 0/0 and 1/0?

What’s the difference between 0/0 and 1/0?

The first one is about the arithmetic, and is fairly simple, and is not very different from the other answers here: neither !! , as an individual number, never makes sense, for one reason or the other, either because there is no such !! But to really understand the difference you probably need to use the calculus approach, which may be more delicate than what you are used to.

At $2.1M, Novartis gene therapy will be world’s most expensive drug

At $2.1M, Novartis gene therapy will be world’s most expensive drug

Known as Zolgensma, the gene therapy treats children under 2 years of age with spinal muscular atrophy, an inherited neuromuscular disease that causes progressive loss of muscle function. To achieve commercial success, Novartis must persuade doctors who treat SMA patients that the muscle-preserving benefits from a one-time injection of Zolgensma will be durable. On a recent conference call, executives argued that even with Zolgensma’s arrival, Spinraza remains the standard of care treatment for SMA, based on the drug’s broader label and more than 7,000 patients treated, some for as long as six years.

First American Financial Corp. Leaked Hundreds of Millions of Insurance Records

First American Financial Corp. Leaked Hundreds of Millions of Insurance Records

The Web site for Fortune 500 real estate title insurance giant First American Financial Corp. [NYSE:FAF] leaked hundreds of millions of documents related to mortgage deals going back to 2003, until notified this week by KrebsOnSecurity. Ben Shoval, the developer who notified KrebsOnSecurity about the data exposure, said that’s because First American is one of the most widely-used companies for real estate title insurance and for closing real estate deals — where both parties to the sale meet in a room and sign stacks of legal documents. But a spokesperson for the company did share the following statement:

I should emphasize that these documents were merely available from First American’s Web site; I do not have any information on whether this fact was known to fraudsters previously, nor do I have any information to suggest the documents were somehow mass-harvested (although a low-and-slow or distributed indexing of this data would not have been difficult for even a novice attacker).

The optimal way to combine finances

The optimal way to combine finances

The approach we landed on, and the one I’d personally recommend, is very similar to the “what’s mine is yours” approach detailed above with one small twist: each person gets a monthly allocation, or “fun money salary,” for their own personal pleasure. You can agree on your own set of customs for how you use the money, but my wife and I have agreed that the only expenses we spend our fun money on are:

The allocations can easily be adjusted to account for how similar your spending styles are: if you and your partner have similar approaches to money or lead strongly overlapping lives, the fun money salary can be very low; if you and your partner have dissimilar approaches to money or lead independent lives, you can give yourselves a larger fun money salary. Both partners have equal access to it, and both partners will continue to receive the same monthly allocation for fun money no matter how much each person makes.

Grafana v6.2

Grafana v6.2

Grafana 6.2 includes improved security, enhanced provisioning workflow, a new Bar Gauge panel, Elasticsearch 7 support, and lazy loading of panels, among other things. Grafana v6.2 ships with a new exciting panel! We have been working on improving table support in our new react panels (Gauge & Bar Gauge), and this is ongoing work that will eventually come to the new Graph, Singlestat, and Table panels we are working on.

Algorithm Solves Graph Isomorphism in Record Time

Algorithm Solves Graph Isomorphism in Record Time

Last month, László Babai, of the University of Chicago, announced that he had come up with a new algorithm for the “graph isomorphism” problem, one of the most tantalizing mysteries in computer science. On the other hand, graph isomorphism is what computer scientists call a “universal” problem: Every possible problem about whether two “combinatorial structures” are isomorphic — for example, the question of whether two different Sudoku puzzles are really the same underlying puzzle — can be recast as a graph isomorphism problem. In 2012, William Gasarch, a computer scientist at the University of Maryland, College Park, informally polled theoretical computer scientists about the graph isomorphism problem and found that 14 people believed it belongs to P, while six believed that it does not.

5M Bid Request/S, 2ms Max Response Time – The Road to Damascus

5M Bid Request/S, 2ms Max Response Time – The Road to Damascus

When you fire your browser or open a mobile app or even your smart TV, an Ad space will send a request to an online advertisement platform like Samsung, Google, Facebook… Most likely, the advertisement platform will act as an exchange (although not necessarily), it will run an auction by fanning out the request to other advertisers and ask them to bid. On a bad day, some Ad campaigns misbehave on external state updates, making the use of libck, a ticking atomic bomb…

I have hardly seen a real excuse to use lock-free data structures, unless you are doing very low level kernel stuff, a concurrent renderer (Most of I have seen are over engineered and didn’t really need it) or your own custom VM infrastructure (Read that warning twice). Watcher: This actor will just loop waiting for a budget change, or Ad campaigns changes, and then synchronize the final state to the processors.

You don’t want a child prodigy

You don’t want a child prodigy

This pattern extends beyond music and sports. My favorite example of a generalist inventor is Gunpei Yokoi, who designed the Game Boy. His philosophy, “lateral thinking with withered technology,” was predicated on dabbling in many different types of older, well-understood (or “withered”) technology, and combining them in new ways, hence the Game Boy’s thoroughly dated tech specs.

Streak (YC S11) is profitable, well funded and hiring in Vancouver

Our backend is running on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). We make extensive use of GCP’s managed services and are always at the forefront of GCP’s evolution:

On the frontend we’ve built the InboxSDK library (https://www.inboxsdk.com) to power our best-in-class integration with Gmail. State and data synchronization is accomplished with a battle tested in-house framework that makes extensive use of streams will be very competitive with compensation, we’re not opening a Vancouver office to get cheap labor.
