What Happened to ‘Miegakure,’ the Game That Promised the 4th Dimension? (2018)

That’s genuinely new, and it’s been the lingering promise of Miegakure, a wild puzzle game from designer Marc ten Bosch that’s been in development since 2009. Bosch quietly updated a development blog about Miegakure since April 2009, in which he explains what it means to rotate an object in 4D, posts links to interviews with the press, and provides updates on the game’s progress. Beyond the sheer complexity of Miegakure’s 4D design, Bosch is developing most of the game himself.

Billion-year-old fossils set back evolution of earliest fungi

Billion-year-old fossils set back evolution of earliest fungi

Chemical analyses suggest that the fossils contain chitin, a compound found in fungal cell walls. The fossils were discovered in billion-year-old rock, and the presence of chitin in the specimens further persuaded the researchers that they were preserved fungi that died a billion years ago. But palaeobiologist Christine Strullu-Derrien of the Natural History Museum in London says that previous molecular analyses have suggested that the only fungi living one billion years ago were simple, single-celled creatures — and did not possess the more complex, filamented structures seen in the fossils.

It’s Never Been Easier to Be a CEO, and the Pay Keeps Rising

Sure, the multibillion headline number was big enough to appease the gods, but the award was structured in such a way that Tesla would have to reach highly ambitious milestones for Mr. Musk to receive any of it. The award’s structure was driven by concern that Mr. Musk’s attention could wander to his other ventures, like SpaceX, or that he could leave Tesla altogether. Analysts for Institutional Shareholder Services said at the time that because Mr. Musk already owned roughly a fifth of Tesla, his financial interests were already strongly aligned with the company.

Dividends and Buybacks Now Larger Than Total Reported Earnings for Entire S&P500

Dividends and Buybacks Now Larger Than Total Reported Earnings for Entire S&P500

According to the latest figures from S&P Global, companies listed on the S&P 500 spent more on dividends and buybacks in 2018 than they actually made in total reported earnings ($1.26 trillion vs $1.1 trillion). To further put the enormous scale of buybacks and dividends into perspective, since the end of 2014, dividends and buybacks have actually exceeded the total increase in S&P 500 market capitalization by $1.3 trillion or roughly 47%. Companies are aware of just how important their buyback programs are to their share prices and it’s hard to see them stopping unless the cost of borrowing forces them to do so.

What is a fork, and how GitHub changed its meaning

What is a fork, and how GitHub changed its meaning

Many distros also apply their own patches on top of Torvalds, perhaps sourcing them from the maintainers of drivers they need a bugfix for, or they maintain their own independent trees which periodically pull in lump sums of changes from other trees – meaning that the simple definition might not include the version of Linux which is installed on your computer, either. The design of GitHub’s fork and pull request model creates a cathedral that keeps people on their platform in a way that a bazaar would not. git request-pull prepares an email which will ask the recipient to fetch changes from a public repository and integrate them into their own branch.

The Guardrails Have Failed

The Guardrails Have Failed

The most alarming news came in an announcement from the White House press secretary that Trump had granted Attorney General William Barr the unilateral authority to declassify any information about the Russia investigators that he wants—including, reportedly, their sources in Russia. For a time, the growing number of anxious Democrats who support impeachment hoped that dramatic public testimony from Special Counsel Robert Mueller would galvanize the public and the party to their side, allowing Democrats to seize narrative control over the Russia investigation, and the broader question of public corruption, back from Trump. Nadler could have subpoenaed other Mueller investigators who have moved on to private life, he could have opened an impeachment inquiry, which would give him a forceful legal argument that he’s entitled to all the testimony and documentation he needs to determine whether the House should recommend Trump be removed from office.

Prospecting for gold by looking in leaves has proven itself in Australia

Prospecting for gold by looking in leaves has proven itself in Australia

Different trees accumulate gold in different ways, so exactly the same species must be sampled across each site for valid comparisons. “The usual calcrete [surface sample] testing was saying ‘Don’t drill here’,” says Colin Rose, Marmota’s executive chairman, “but the tree sampling was saying ‘Drill here’.” Drilling revealed a five-metre-thick vein with 27g of gold per tonne, more than 30 metres below the surface.
