Daniel Steeves, chief information officer for the Ottawa Police Service, says that a robbery-investigation unit spent six months testing a facial-recognition system. Many distinguish between the sort of facial-recognition software that Mr Steeves’s department used, which matches suspects to mugshots already in a police database, to the more widely feared version—used in China, for instance—that blankets cities with cameras that employ facial recognition and monitors citizens accused of no crime. Chris Fisher, executive director of strategic initiatives for the Seattle Police Department, recently oversaw the building of a data system linking previously siloed streams of information, such as emergency-call records, stops based on reasonable suspicion, and police use of force.

Over the years, the hunt for the remains of the last ship known to have brought enslaved people into the United States has been fraught with a mix of tumult and hope. Hopes were raised, then dashed, then raised again — not only among marine archaeologists, but also among the descendants of the ship’s human cargo, many of whom make their homes in a tiny South Alabama community called Africatown. Then, on Wednesday, came an announcement from the Alabama Historical Commission: Another shipwreck, one of many marooned under a muddy stretch of the Mobile River, was almost certainly the Clotilda, a wooden vessel of horrors that carried 110 Africans to the United States in 1860, more than a half-century after the importation of slaves was declared illegal.

Writing in Nature, Drozdov et al.1 report several key results that confirm that, when compressed to pressures of more than one million times Earth’s atmospheric pressure, lanthanum hydride compounds become superconducting at 250 K — a higher temperature than for any other known material. Then, in 2018, two independent research groups reported, almost simultaneously, that compressed lanthanum hydride compounds might exhibit superconductivity at even higher temperatures, ranging from 215 K to perhaps as high as 280 K (refs 6–8)6–8. The common features of these hydrogen sulfide and lanthanum hydride superconductors are that they are rich in hydrogen and that superconductivity emerges only under pressures above about one million times atmospheric pressure.

The move could be a turning point in shifting global views of Hong Kong, where individual freedoms have eroded as Beijing tightens its hold, threatening the city’s reputation as an oasis of rule of law in Asia. Disclosure of Germany’s decision, made last year, is likely to inflame an already heated debate in Hong Kong over a proposal to let the territory’s government send criminal suspects to jurisdictions with which it does not have extradition agreements, including mainland China. The government has said people accused of political crimes will not be extradited and that the changes will prevent Hong Kong from becoming a haven for criminals.

However, after the chips were completed, several Commodore engineers disagreed with the project’s direction, insisting that the company should instead develop a successor to the VIC-20, Commodore’s low-cost computer, not a console. Commodore CEO Jack Tramiel opted to go ahead with both projects, however he insisted the computer come with 64 kilobytes of RAM in order to make business applications more practical than they were on the memory-starved VIC-20. Launched in Japan in early 1982, Commodore promoted an upcoming North American release of the Max Machine – but it never happened, with Commodore, concerned by poor Japanese sales, deciding instead to keep the VIC-20 as its low-cost offering, and restrict the enhanced features provided by its new chips to the Commodore 64.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — SpaceX just took a giant leap toward making global internet coverage a reality as its fifth of the year took flight on Thursday evening (May 23), sending 60 internet-beaming satellites into space. Tucked inside the rocket’s were 60 satellites — the first batch of SpaceX’s Starlink megaconstellation, which the company hopes will help provide affordable internet coverage to the world. In total, SpaceX plans to launch nearly 12,000 of these satellites, which will park themselves in low-Earth orbit and beam internet coverage to the world below.

But, whereas developing a soft, fat body was one possible result of immoderation, they remained primarily concerned about the moral effects that “luxury” could have on the person. Building upon the idea that sexual intercourse was a heat-generating activity capable of “melting” fat, and that excess flesh to some extent resulted from the accumulation of humors, Soranus also said that frequent and vigorous coitus was an ideal method for women to maintain their figures. In the case of elite bodies bloated by luxurious living, fatness was a reminder of how the ideals and practices of other peoples might end up softening Rome itself.

However, to comply with a recent order from the U.S. government, Google pulled the Chinese tech company and smartphone manufacturer Huawei’s license to use the proprietary Google software that sits on top of Android. While Google gives off the impression that Android is open and available to everyone, these services represent a quiet control that the company doesn’t often enforce over its hardware partners — though, as it has now proven, it certainly can. For new phones, Huawei may be able to use the open-source version of Android, but it can’t be a Google partner.

Because it lies on the perpendicular bisector of segment $latex \overline{AB} $, point Q is equidistant to A and B. Since every point on the perpendicular bisector of segment $latex \overline{AB} $ is equidistant to A and B, we have another powerful way to think about the perpendicular bisector: as a dividing line. Similarly, everything on Adrienne’s side of $latex \overline{AB} $’s perpendicular bisector is closer to Adrienne than to Brandon.

Terminus is a highly configurable terminal emulator for Windows, macOS and Linux

Terminus is an alternative to Windows’ standard terminal (conhost), PowerShell ISE, PuTTY or iTerm Terminus is not a new shell or a MinGW or Cygwin replacement. Neither is it lightweight – if RAM usage is of importance, consider Conemu or Alacritty

Plugins and themes can be installed directly from the Settings view inside Terminus. Pull requests and plugins are welcome!
