Making a Game Boy Game in 2017

Let’s introduce the elephant in the room: the original Game Boy model can only display 4 different colors. Despite being limited to 4 colors only, the Game Boy actually uses 3 different palettes to display images, and that’s very cool! To make a fade-in on a Game Boy, you simply need modify the colors on the 3 palettes.

NASA executive quits weeks after appointment to lead 2024 moon landing plan

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (Reuters) – A top NASA executive hired in April to guide strategy for returning astronauts to the moon by 2024 has resigned, the space agency said on Thursday, the culmination of internal strife and dwindling congressional support for the lunar initiative. His departure came after lawmakers rejected NASA’s proposal to create a separate directorate within the space agency to oversee future lunar missions and ultimately develop human exploration of Mars. Last week, the Trump administration asked Congress to increase NASA’s spending next year by $1.6 billion as a “down payment” on the accelerated goal of landing Americans back on the moon by 2024, more than half a century after the end of the U.S. Apollo lunar program.

That way the code that calls this function can decide to append further without rescanning the string:

This is, of course, linear in performance, not n-squared, so it doesn’t suffer from degradation when you have a lot of stuff to concatenate. Because a byte can only store numbers between 0 and 255, Pascal strings are limited to 255 bytes in length, but because they are not null terminated they occupy the same amount of memory as ASCIZ strings. Because otherwise, you see, a clever hacker will read my code and notice that I’m only allocating 1000 bytes and hoping it will be enough, and they’ll find some clever way to trick me into strcatting a 1100 byte string into my 1000 bytes of memory, thus overwriting the stack frame and changing the return address so that when this function returns, it executes some code which the hacker himself wrote.

Plankton Haven’t Been the Same Since the Industrial Revolution

Plankton Haven’t Been the Same Since the Industrial Revolution

Centuries of fossil records and live-capture data show that some marine plankton populations reflect a clear change in response to human industrialization and the warming oceans that have come with it. The ratio of plankton species in these communities shifted in proportion to changes in sea temperature, indicating that ocean warming has deeply altered these populations and their wider marine ecosystems. Planktonic foraminifera provide a comprehensive fossil record because their hard calcite shells are preserved well in sediment layers at the bottom of the ocean, says lead author Lukas Jonkers, a paleontological oceanographer at the University of Bremen in Germany.

Consuming Hacker News

Consuming Hacker News

This can depend on a lot of things such as time-of-posting, subject or title (this article builds really cool Neural Network for Rating Your Hacker News Title. First, there needs to be serendipity, otherwise we’d all just be reading the same thing all the time (which would be boring) and second the volume of submissions: Every hour 30 or so articles get posted, which is enough to fill the front page, but the front page entries tend to stay there for a day or so. Recently, I’ve been hearing about Skimfeed, which aggregates 12-or-so articles from a bunch of news sources including HN.

The Bitter Life of a Shattered Jockey

The Bitter Life of a Shattered Jockey

One of the award recipients was a jockey named Mary Bacon, who was named the most courageous athlete of the year for repeatedly overcoming brutal injuries suffered on the track. Not even four years into a career that would run its course by the time Jimmy Carter moved into the White House, hospital stays had become commonplace for Mary Bacon. My attempt to nail down an accurate portrayal of Bacon’s life began with cross-checking numerous features and news articles against one another, and eventually led me to speaking with a number of people who crossed paths with her during her peak horse racing years, including a fellow jockey, a longtime paramour, a couple of white supremacists, a source close to her family, and her ex-husband’s third wife.

Hong Kong activists wanted by police gain protection in Germany

Hong Kong activists wanted by police gain protection in Germany

The move could be a turning point in shifting global views of Hong Kong, where individual freedoms have eroded as Beijing tightens its hold, threatening the city’s reputation as an oasis of rule of law in Asia. Disclosure of Germany’s decision, made last year, is likely to inflame an already heated debate in Hong Kong over a proposal to let the territory’s government send criminal suspects to jurisdictions with which it does not have extradition agreements, including mainland China. The government has said people accused of political crimes will not be extradited and that the changes will prevent Hong Kong from becoming a haven for criminals.

The Art of Doodling

The Art of Doodling

A selection from Schulson’s collection—including Queen Victoria’s donkey doodles, Stephen King’s spookily jubilant stick figure, and an erotic painting by Tennessee Williams—appears below. In 1953, the date Cocteau writes twice on this piece, his suite of eponymously titled etchings was published by Éditions du Rocher, Monaco; this drawing resembles the etching titled, “Le Comte d’Orgel XII,” and likely depicts both the count and the young man (facing forward) at the center of an adulterous relationship involving the count’s wife. This pen-and-ink sketch seems at first to have been drawn by a child, but in the lower corner, Stephen King signs his name in expressive cursive.

Huawei P30 Pro Camera Review

Huawei P30 Pro Camera Review

At a 5x zoom factor, the P30 Pro relies exclusively on the tele-camera, but for intermediate zoom factors between 3 and 5x, it captures image data using both the primary and tele cameras combined. Compared to previous Huawei models such as the P20 Pro and the Mate 20 Pro, the most obvious improvements are in the areas of bokeh and zoom, where the P30 Pro sets new benchmarks, thanks to its innovative 5x tele-camera with folded optics and ToF sensor that allows for more precise depth maps in bokeh mode. Even at near darkness—at a light level of 1 lux, where most competitors struggle—the P30 Pro camera is capable of capturing well-exposed images.
