How should we critique research?

How should we critique research?

It can’t just be that a criticism is boring and provokes eye-rolling—someone who in every genetics discussion from ~2000–2010 harped on statistical power & polygenicity and stated that all these exciting new candidate-gene & gene-environment interaction results were so much hogwash and the entire literature garbage would have been deeply irritating to read, wear out their welcome fast, and have been absolutely right. All of our models are false, but some may be useful, and a good statistical analysis is merely ‘good enough’. It usually doesn’t have to do with predictive power (whether quantified as R2 or AUC or ROC etc); sheer prediction is the goal of a subset of research (although if one could show that a particular choice led to a lower predictive score, that would be a good critique), and in many contexts, the best model is not particularly predictive at all, and a model being too predictive is a red flag.

The Art of Command Line (2015)

The Art of Command Line (2015)

In Bash, use Tab to complete arguments or list all available commands and ctrl-r to search through command history (after pressing, type to search, press ctrl-r repeatedly to cycle through more matches, press Enter to execute the found command, or hit the right arrow to put the result in the current line to allow editing). A useful habit is to start a script like this, which will make it detect and abort on common errors and print a message:

In Bash, note there are lots of kinds of variable expansion. It can be useful to make a few optimizations to your ssh configuration; for example, this contains settings to avoid dropped connections in certain network environments, uses compression (which is helpful with scp over low-bandwidth connections), and multiplex channels to the same server with a local control file:

The Case for a High-Level Kernel-Bypass I/O Abstraction

The Case for a High-Level Kernel-Bypass I/O Abstraction

Since most applications want the same functionality (e.g., the ability to send data of any size at any speed), we propose using a library OS to provide a high-level interface for kernel-bypass. Having applications use a high-level interface provides the following benefits:

Ease-of-use: Application programmers do not have to implement OS functionality, like flow control, which requires them to understand the hardware limitations and features (e.g., that DPDK needs a full networking stack but RDMA just needs flow control). Today, building an application that works across RDMA and DPDK requires supporting two different interfaces and implementing different OS functionality in the application since RDMA NICs handle congestion control but not flow control, while DPDK NICs do not implement either.

OP-Z Synthesizer

OP-Z Synthesizer

OP–Z has two separate fx-buses, shared across all instrument tracks. on OP–Z the punch-in fx is a separate programmable track just like any instrument. this makes the OP–Z a powerful live performance instrument, extending the possibilities of a pre-programmed track to endless variations.

Amazon Shareholders Rejected Employees’ Call to Respond to Climate Change

Amazon Shareholders Rejected Employees’ Call to Respond to Climate Change

Amazon shareholders rejected a proposal to develop a plan to respond to climate change during the company’s annual meeting on Wednesday. The resolution would have required Amazon’s board of directors to prepare a public plan for “disruptions posed by climate change” and how the company will reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. “I want Amazon to do more on climate change because I think it’s unacceptable for one of the richest companies in the world to continue to take half actions as the consequences of its emissions put so many lives of the global poor at risk,” he said.

The Common Lisp Cookbook

The Common Lisp Cookbook

This is a collaborative project that aims to provide for Common Lisp something similar to the Perl Cookbook published by O’Reilly. We need contributors – write a chapter that’s missing and add it, find an open question and provide an answer, find bugs and report them, (If you have no idea what might be missing but would like to help, take a look at the table of contents of the Perl Cookbook.) The pages here on Github are kept up to date.

An abstraction called text styles – How to save yourself from a typographic mess

An abstraction called text styles – How to save yourself from a typographic mess

Sharing an understanding of the concept of responsive design is a requirement for designing a functional typographic hierarchy, and thus for creating an effective text styles abstraction. Developers are quite well off by creating the text styles mobile first, and then applying the required adjustments for each breakpoint. Using polyfluid sizing relying in viewport units and linear interpolation, we can create text styles that match the exact sizes defined for selected breakpoints, and are linearly scaled between these breakpoints.
