A Rocket Built by Students Reached Space for the First Time

In 2013, the USC rocket team attempted its first space shot with the Traveler I, which exploded just seconds after launch. Following the failure of the first two Traveler rockets, the USC team began to develop the Fathom rocket and Graveler motor as testbeds for flight systems that would be used on subsequent space shots. USC may have been the first collegiate team to make it to space, but the race is far from over.

In Pursuit of Smaller Things With The Pi Zero

For some time now I’ve been a huge fan of the ubiquitous Raspberry Pi computer in all of its various forms. There’s no point in having a tiny computer if you have lug a honking great keyboard around as well; and so my unhappy quest began…

As mentiond the Zero has a limited number of USB connectors on board – one (1) if you allow for the power connector – which obviously means you have limited connection options. My particular problem was that I was able to connect to the Pi using a keyboard, or a mouse, but not reliably at the same time.

Hashtag Propaganda. Secret UK govt tactics for post-terror planning

Hashtag Propaganda. Secret UK govt tactics for post-terror planning

The British government has prepared for terrorist incidents by pre-planning social media campaigns that are designed to appear to be a spontaneous public response to attacks, Middle East Eye has learned. A number of Western governments are understood to have exchanged information about the way in which they use social media in an attempt to shape public responses following terrorist attacks. Examples of “controlled spontaneity” within the UK that MEE has identified include:

After Alan Henning, a British aid worker, was murdered by Islamic State in October 2014, the Research, Information and Communications Unit (RICU) – a controversial propaganda unit that is part of the Office of Security and Counterterrorism at the UK Home Office – turned to a striking image that had already been developed by one of its private sector contractors.

Visualizing PostgreSQL Vacuum Progress

Visualizing PostgreSQL Vacuum Progress

How can PostgreSQL find all references to a tuple — a handful of needles in a handful of haystacks — so that it can remove it from the heap without leaving references dangling from indexes? Logically, the process of removing a tuple from the heap involves a few steps (note: this isn’t exactly what happens — it’s a conceptual approximation):

To summarize: if PostgreSQL just reused a given ctid without first removing references from the indexes, then indexes would be left with pointers to who-knows-what in the heap. In the table describing the vacuum phases, the text mentions that “vacuuming indexes…may happen multiple times per vacuum if is insufficient to store the number of dead tuples found.”

“Once-in-a-Hundred Year” Sightings of Bamboo Blossoms Reported in Japan

“Once-in-a-Hundred Year” Sightings of Bamboo Blossoms Reported in Japan

While some species of bamboo produce blossoms as often as once every three years, many of them flower at extremely long intervals, between 40 to 80 years. Reports of bamboo blossoms from central to southern Japan have been coming in:

As reported by the Kochi Shimbun newspaper, the Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden learned that its kinmeichiku 金明竹 bamboo, a madake variant with the unwieldy scientific name Phyllostachys bambusoides Sieb. A man in Mimata, Miyazaki Prefecture discovered blossoms on bamboo plants (species unknown) growing in his yard, according to a story published by Asahi Shimbun on February 10th.

Literature as Flattery

Literature as Flattery

These trends impact how stories are written, and writers have developed tools that affirm and reinforce a way of reading that flatters the reader and valorizes membership in a parochial subculture. A Vox article about “Cat Person” chronicled how readers mistook the author with the protagonist and commented on how “readers have called it an ‘article’ or an ‘essay’ or generally treated it as a piece of nonfiction rather than as a short story.” There are two ways a writer can deliver information to the audience without the characters knowing: (1) within the story; or (2) through signals that all reasonable readers are expected to see.

Goldman Sachs, Patagonia, and the Mysteries of “Business Casual”

Goldman Sachs, Patagonia, and the Mysteries of “Business Casual”

A corporate logo on the breast of his synthetic-wool fleece vest suggested that he worked for the limited-liability company developing One Vanderbilt Place, a super-tall skyscraper going up on East Forty-second Street, where it will tower over the row of Madison Avenue men’s stores that are the enduring old corridor of establishment style. Later that month, the top three guys on the management committee of the Goldman Sachs Group devoted their absurdly valuable time to approving a five-sentence e-mail with the subject line “Firmwide Dress Code”; the message alluded to “the changing nature of workplaces generally in favor of a more casual environment” and urged employees to “dress in a manner that is consistent with your clients’ expectations.” The shop had just ordered a new print run of “Rebel Without a Suit: The Not-So-Casual Road to Casual Friday,” a brief history of the business-casual tradition, by Richard Press and Joseph Cosgriff.
