Lisp in Web-Based Applications

Paul Graham

(This is an excerpt of a talk given at BBN Labs in Cambridge, MA, in
April 2001.) Instead the users all tended to be end-users,
the actual merchants themselves. Because of the way Web-based software gets released,
you have to design the software so that it’s easy to change.

A Major U.S. Utility Is Closing Its Coal-Fired Power Plants a Decade Early

One of the United States’ largest utilities, Xcel Energy Inc., announced it will close its remaining coal-fired power plants in the Upper Midwest a decade ahead of schedule and add 3,000 megawatts of new solar capacity by 2030, E&E News reported. Xcel said it will increase investment in energy efficiency measures, bring 1,850 megawatts of new wind capacity online in Minnesota by 2022, as well as keep its Monticello Nuclear Generating Station operating until 2040, a decade later than planned, according to E&E News. The clean energy strategy is part of new legal settlement between the company, environmental organizations, and labor groups involving Xcel’s proposed $650 million purchase of a 760-megawatt natural gas plant.

QEMU 4.0 adds micro:bit emulation support

QEMU 4.0 adds micro:bit emulation support

Unlike existing micro:bit simulators, QEMU performs full-system emulation and actually runs the same ARM code as the real hardware. The MakeCode editor for JavaScript development includes a micro:bit simulator:

This simulator does not execute any ARM code and is therefore not running the same CPU instructions as a real micro:bit. Unlike the MakeCode simulator, QEMU emulates the micro:bit CPU and boots from the same ARM code as the real micro:bit board.

Privacy Preserving Ad Click Attribution for the Web

Privacy Preserving Ad Click Attribution for the Web

The only data needed for measurement is that someone who clicked an ad on Site A made a purchase on Site B.

Today we are presenting a new technology to allow attribution of ad clicks on the web while preserving user privacy. Here are the important privacy aspects of this step:

To achieve ad click attribution, the browser needs to be able to match conversions with stored ad clicks. A cross-site anchor element that wants to push ad click attribution data into the browser looks like this:

To debug such elements, you use the Web Inspector’s console with the “Preserve Log” setting enabled.

Zork and the Z-Machine: Bringing the Mainframe to 8-Bit Home Computers

Zork and the Z-Machine: Bringing the Mainframe to 8-Bit Home Computers

Using the strong natural language processing capability of MDL, Marc Blank, Bruce Daniels and Tim Anderson then built upon Lebling’s efforts to create the first prototype game that would ultimately turn into the game we know as ‘Zork’ today. The concept of a home computer was only beginning to take hold, with the introduction of computers like TRS-80 and the Apple II in 1977, though even that system was incredibly limited compared to the mainframes that were being used for text adventures at the time by students around the US. They mulled various game ideas that could be adapted to work on home computers, but porting Zork just made too much sense.

Implementing a Convolutional Neural Network from Scratch in Python

Implementing a Convolutional Neural Network from Scratch in Python

As mentioned before, CNNs include conv layers that use a set of filters to turn input images into output images. This means it’ll turn the 28×28 input image into a 26x26x8 output volume:

Each of the 4 filters in the conv layer produces a 26×26 output, so stacked together they make up a 26x26x8 volume. Here’s an example of a Max Pooling layer with a pooling size of 2:

To perform max pooling, we traverse the input image in 2×2 blocks (because pool size = 2) and put the max value into the output image at the corresponding pixel.
