Object-oriented code in F# (2012)

Object-oriented code in F# (2012)

As should be apparent, you should generally try to prefer functional-style code over object-oriented code in F#, but in some situations, you may need all the features of a fully fledged OO language – classes, inheritance, virtual methods, etc. Just as in C#, F# can extend existing classes with extension methods. F# classes can have events, and the events can be triggered and responded to.

Alexis Ohanian speaks out against “always-on” work culture

Alexis Ohanian, venture investor and husband of tennis superstar Serena Williams, loves getting asked how he balances family life and his career as managing partner of Initialized Capital. He and Ms. Williams became first-time parents in 2017, and in the months that followed, Mr. Ohanian frequently spoke out about why it was so important for him to take time away from the Bay Area firm he co-founded to bond with their daughter. Parental leave wasn’t only a fun way to spend 16 weeks with their newborn Alexis Olympia Jr., he said at The Wall Street Journal’s Future of Everything Festival on Tuesday, but it was also a reminder of why work should never be the only metric for measuring success.

The US reportedly considering blacklisting Chinese surveillance firm Hikvision

The US reportedly considering blacklisting Chinese surveillance firm Hikvision

The U.S. administration is considering limits to Chinese video surveillance firm Hikvision’s ability to buy U.S. technology, the New York Times reported on Tuesday, in a move that deepens worries about trade frictions between the world’s two top economies. The move would effectively place Hikvision on a U.S. blacklist and U.S. companies may have to obtain government approval to supply components to Hikvision, the paper said. The U.S. Commerce Department blocked Huawei Technologies from buying U.S. goods last week, effectively banning U.S. companies from doing business with the Chinese firm, a major escalation in the trade war, saying Huawei was involved in activities contrary to national security.

One side of this was Visual F#, or “VisualFSharp”; a product within Visual Studio comprised of a compiler and tooling that you could use on Windows. This distinction was simple: if you’re using F# from Microsoft (i.e., on Windows via Visual Studio), it’s called Visual F#; otherwise, it’s called F#! NET Core, F# is now officially built and packaged by Microsoft in a way that is orthogonal to Visual Studio and Windows.

Huawei unwanted: Asian shops shun phone trade-ins on Google suspension worries

SINGAPORE/MANILA (Reuters) – Mobile phone retailers in some Asian countries are refusing to accept Huawei devices for trade-ins, as more consumers look to offload their device on worries Google suspending business with the Chinese firm will disrupt services. Previously, about five people a day were looking to trade in their Huawei phones, but that has jumped to 20 in the last two days, said Zack, a salesman at Mobile Square in Singapore who declined to give his last name. IQ rates are dropping in many developed countries

IQ rates are dropping in many developed countries

These raw scores have been rising on a variety of standard IQ tests for over half a century. But current IQ tests are designed to measure core cognitive skills such as short-term memory, problem-solving speed and visual processing), and rising scores show that these cognitive capabilities can actually be sharpened by environmental factors such as higher-quality schools and more demanding workplaces. And while we might be able to compensate with skills besides intelligence, like determination or passion, in a world where IQ scores continue to fall — and where the drop expands to places like the United States — there’s also a bleaker scenario: a global intelligence crisis that undermines humanity’s problem-solving capacity and leaves us ill-equipped to tackle the complex challenges posed by AI, global warming and developments we have yet to imagine.

Danone is engaging all 100k employees in the running of the company

In recognition of Danone’s need to reflect this new reality, Faber decided to hand a share to every one of the company’s 100,000 employees employed as of July 2018 (link in French.) In fact, over 80,000 staff took the survey, with 33,000 saying they wanted to be more involved in future discussions, and 2,000 volunteering to lead results analysis and feedback sessions (Danone said it was too early in the process to provide details about how employee engagement had actually been incorporated into its decisions.) Faber says it’s unlikely that heavily engineered foods will ever be part of Danone’s future.
