Letter from an “Anti-School Teacher”

Letter from an “Anti-School Teacher”

Assume schools can either set the average grade to B or C. Schools that set the average grade to C have higher standards so students from those schools graduate college at a higher rate. Assume also that college admissions officers do not have perfect information about the standards of each high school so they admit students from schools where a B is the the average grade more often than students from schools where a C is the average grade. 45 percent of students from low standards schools graduate college while 55 percent of students from high standards schools graduate.

GNU Guix 1.0.1 Released

GNU Guix 1.0.1 Released

This new version fixes bugs in the graphical installer for the standalone Guix System. If you installed Guix System with the graphical installer, chances are that, because of this bug, you ended up with a system where all the usual GNU/Linux commands— , , , etc.—were not in . We hope 1.0.1 will allow you to try and see what declarative and programmable system configuration management is like, because that’s where the real value of Guix System is—the graphical installer is icing on the cake.

Rust Koans

Rust Koans

For the eighth day in a row, Neophyte Col found himself standing before the Two Great Guards of the temple. The First Guard handed the parchment back to Col. Then, in a blinding motion, slapped Col across the face with his bare hand. It was not as though his program was particularly complicated, and yet he could not convince the Two Great Guards to permit him entry to the temple.

Experiments find higher social class more likely to have inflated sense of skill

Experiments find higher social class more likely to have inflated sense of skill

This time, social class was measured by students’ assessment of how they saw themselves relative to others in the United States, their parents’ income and their parents’ education. Researchers found that students of higher social classes failed to outperform their peers in a trivia exercise. She also had some concerns about the findings from the first of the four experiments, which she believed relied too heavily on the participants’ own sense of social class standing.

Mimetic Traps

Mimetic Traps

I’ve been a graduate student in physics for almost three years, but I only recently figured out why. I’d never given physics much thought at all before my senior year in high school — but once I was surrounded by other physics students, competing for the same pool of grades and research positions, I could think of little else. It decouples the social reward signal from the rest of objective reality — you can spend years ascending ranks in a hierarchy without producing anything that the rest of humanity finds valuable.

Underground network of microbes that connects trees mapped for first time

Underground network of microbes that connects trees mapped for first time

Millions of species of fungi and bacteria swap nutrients between soil and the roots of trees, forming a vast, interconnected web of organisms throughout the woods. Now, for the first time, scientists have mapped this “wood wide web” on a global scale, using a database of more than 28,000 tree species living in more than 70 countries. The researchers wrote a computer algorithm to search for correlations between the EM-, AM-, and nitrogen-fixer–associated trees in Crowther’s database and local environmental factors such as temperature, precipitation, soil chemistry, and topography.

Security for Elasticsearch is now free

Security for Elasticsearch is now free

Security is free, starting in versions 6.8.0 and 7.1.0
For a change this important, we wanted to make sure that it was available to as many people as possible, so today we are releasing versions 6.8.0 and 7.1.0 of the Elastic Stack. These versions do not contain new features; they simply make the following core security features free in the default distribution of the Elastic Stack:
TLS for encrypted communications
File and native realm for creating and managing users
Role-based access control for controlling user access to cluster APIs and indexes; also allows multi-tenancy for Kibana with security for Kibana Spaces

Previously, these core security features required a paid Gold subscription. By moving the core security features into the default distribution of Elastic Stack, we can ensure that all clusters launched and managed by ECK are secured by default at creation time, without any additional burden on the admins.

Notes on Weight Initialization for Deep Neural Networks

Notes on Weight Initialization for Deep Neural Networks

Now, if we scale the weights of the matrix and divide them by , we will be picking elements of from a normal distribution with mean and variance = or (see the next section for a proof). This will in turn give us a distribution of in which each element has 0 mean and std = 1, thus allowing us to repeat the product as many times as we want (or in other words, make our network deeper). Dividing weight matrix by (num_inputs = 512 in the running example), known as Xavier Initialization, helps in ensuring that the output of each of the multiplications is well-behaved, thus ensuring that the sequence of multiplications yields a reasonable output at each step.

Tim Cook’s Message to 2019 Graduates: ‘My Generation Has Failed You’

On Saturday, Apple CEO Tim Cook, who was recently acclaimed as an even better leader than the legendary Steve Jobs, carved out a morning from his very busy schedule to deliver a commencement speech for the 2019 graduates of Tulane University in New Orleans. But as soon as Cook stepped up to the podium on Saturday, his message to Tulane’s graduates became the very opposite of what was expected of him—instead of presenting himself as a role model for the young graduates in the audience, Cook encouraged them to challenge older generations’ successes and to find their own.

Wide Color Photos Are Coming to Android: Things You Need to Know to Be Prepared

Wide Color Photos Are Coming to Android: Things You Need to Know to Be Prepared

This means when given images, the application always checks the color space and does conversion based on its capability of showing wide color gamut, and thus even if the application can’t handle wide color gamut it can still show the sRGB color gamut of the image correctly without color distortion. A wide color gamut capable application implies when given wide color gamut images, it can show the colors outside of sRGB color space. If your application doesn’t adopt wide color gamut, you are very likely to just want to decode every image to sRGB color space.
