Rust Koans (2015)

Rust Koans (2015)

For the eighth day in a row, Neophyte Col found himself standing before the Two Great Guards of the temple. The First Guard handed the parchment back to Col. Then, in a blinding motion, slapped Col across the face with his bare hand. It was not as though his program was particularly complicated, and yet he could not convince the Two Great Guards to permit him entry to the temple.

How My Product Is Unexpectedly Being Used as a Tool to Fight Dementia

How My Product Is Unexpectedly Being Used as a Tool to Fight Dementia

My mother was DELIGHTED beyond words when she received her 1st packet of NanaGram photos. My brother and I originally built NanaGram as a gift for our grandfather when he turned 94, but looking back on the past year it was my grandmother who benefited from the regular photo deliveries most. This worked fine when my grandmother was in an assisted living facility, but whenever she went to the hospital and later was in rotation at various hands-on nursing homes, I couldn’t really ship the photos easily.

Intel Performance Hit 5x Harder Than AMD After Spectre, Meltdown Patches

Intel Performance Hit 5x Harder Than AMD After Spectre, Meltdown Patches

The question, especially as new disclosures have stacked up, is how large the impacts would be and how would they change the performance comparison between Intel and AMD? With no fixes applied, across its entire test suite, the CPU performance ranking is:

With the full suite of mitigations enabled, the CPU performance ranking is:

AMD, in other words, now leads the aggregate performance metrics, moving from 3rd and 4th to 1st and 3rd. But the cumulative impact of these patches could result in more tests where Intel and AMD switch rankings as a result of performance impacts that only hit one vendor.

Building a home NAS on a shoestring budget with the Rock64 SBC (2018)

Building a home NAS on a shoestring budget with the Rock64 SBC (2018)

At that price, I could even order a second and instead of running my backups across the USB 3.0 bus from one drive to another, I could backup across gigabit LAN from Primary NAS to Backup NAS (maybe in the future!) When these boards come out, I may very easily buy one of them to replace the Rock64 and then the Rock64 can run four drives as my backup NAS so I’m not running my rsync backups over the same USB bus that all drives share. I needed some supplementary parts to complete this build, so here was the total parts list:

I already had all my drives, a mix of HGST and Western Digital NAS drives that were coming from the QNAP into the new Orico enclosures, and I already had my backup drives in pre-existing dual-drive USB 3.0 enclosures too.

The State of Apple’s Developer Documentation

The State of Apple’s Developer Documentation

It appears that most of the old iOS conceptual documents have been moved to the documentation archive and are now unsupported. Is there really no iOS Text Programming concepts? If this is the case every single iOS developer should be screaming from the rafters.

Mexico becomes the deadliest country for journalists in 2019

Mexico becomes the deadliest country for journalists in 2019

The 28-year-old journalist known as Ñaca Ñaca ran a Facebook news site called Ocurrió Aqui (Happened here) that reported on local stories from Playa Del Carmen and Quintana Roo, which remains a popular tourist location despite a recent rise in reported violence. According to news agency Quintana Roo Hoy, the journalist covered topics such as crime and violence in the city, and one of his most recent stories covered a shootout linked to extortion at local Cervecería Chapultepec where one person died and 11 were injured. “This brutal murder of Francisco Romero Díaz is a direct consequence of the unabating violence in Quintana Roo and Playa del Carmen, a state and city popular with tourists, but lethal for journalists,” said Jan-Albert Hootsen, CPJ’s Mexico representative in an alert released by the organization.

The Trouble with “Finding Your People” Online

The Trouble with “Finding Your People” Online

A practice of hospitality— recovering threshold, table, patience, listening, and from there generating seedbeds for virtue and friendship on the one hand — on the other hand radiating out for possible community, for rebirth of community.” It appears to run against the grain of at least one strand of early internet hopes and hype:  that the internet would somehow bring about a harmonious global village, that we would not “find our people,” exactly, but that we would discover that we were all one people, one great human tribe, and that all differences would melt away if only we were connected. We could say that one of the apparent boons of the internet, especially early on, has been to increasingly grant us access to groups of affinity, to help us find our people.

The Negotiability of “Severity” Levels

The Negotiability of “Severity” Levels

– (link)

As we study different organizations across the industry, we’ve asked people questions about what “severity levels” mean to them, including:

The conclusion that we’ve come to is that the term “severity” has many different meanings and purposes (in the same way post-incident reviews are) when it is used to categorize incidents. For example, here is how I defined severity levels at Etsy many years ago (I can imagine that these may have changed since I left):

More often than not, “severity level” is given as a way of categorizing the impact an incident has had on the customers of the business. In some cases, the concept of severity level is used by people responding to an incident as a way to describe their current assessment of the event to relay to others.
