Death to the Open Floor Plan. Long Live Separate Rooms

Death to the Open Floor Plan. Long Live Separate Rooms

In a recent essay in The Atlantic, Ian Bogost described a new luxury concept called the “mess kitchen”—a second kitchen out of sight from the main kitchen and the rest of the open plan. The common house, as well as working-class living environments such as dwelling houses and tenements, only had one to three rooms: a kitchen space and a living and/or sleeping space, which were multipurpose, used for working as well as living. Architectural historians place a great deal of emphasis on the bungalow, often citing it as the beginning of the “open” floor plan, since many bungalows omitted the closed wall between the living and dining areas.

Google announces a new $999 Glass augmented reality headset

Google has announced a new version of its business-focused Glass augmented reality headset, which it’s now designating an official Google product instead of an experiment. Google says that with the XR1’s power, the new Glass headset can incorporate “computer vision and advanced machine learning capabilities.” Glass was originally billed as a mass-market augmented reality headset, but after complaints about privacy and functionality, Google reinvented it as a tool for surgeons, factory workers, and other professionals.

Millions of Instagram influencers had their contact data scraped and exposed

From a brief review of the data, each record contained public data scraped from influencer Instagram accounts, including their bio, profile picture, the number of followers they have, if they’re verified and their location by city and country, but also contained their private contact information, such as the Instagram account owner’s email address and phone number. Two of the people responded and confirmed their email address and phone number found in the database was used to set up their Instagram accounts. Pranay Swarup, the company’s founder and chief executive, did not respond to a request for comment and several questions, including how the company obtained private Instagram account email addresses and phone numbers.

One whole-body MRI could replace multiple cancer scans

One whole-body MRI could replace multiple cancer scans

Two studies published in Lancet Respiratory Medicine and Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology show that for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and colorectal cancer, one whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) scan can work just as well as multiple scans, offering a quicker, cheaper alternative, preferred by patients and involving less exposure to radiation. The average cost of a WB-MRI scan for NSCLC patients was £317, half the £620 cost for multiple scans and the cost of a WB-MRI scan for colorectal patients was £216, compared with £285 for multiple scans. The two ‘Streamline’ studies – the biggest of their kind to compare WB-MRI with standard scans – found that for both cancers, using one WB-MRI scan removed the need for additional scans for nearly all patients, and reduced the average time taken to assess patients by almost a week.

If you love your job, someone may be taking advantage of you

If you love your job, someone may be taking advantage of you

Professor Aaron Kay found that people see it as more acceptable to make passionate employees do extra, unpaid, and more demeaning work than they did for employees without the same passion. The researchers found that people consider it more legitimate to make passionate employees leave family to work on a weekend, work unpaid, and handle unrelated tasks that were not in the job description. “In the case of working employees harder for no extra pay, or asking them to do demeaning work or work outside their job description, believing this is fair because these workers are indulging their passions may be a similar means of justification,” Kay said.

Terrorists build Wi-Fi bombs to dodge cops’ cellphone jammers

Terrorists build Wi-Fi bombs to dodge cops’ cellphone jammers

The explosives were discovered in a raid earlier this month, and included a switching mechanism that enabled them to be detonated using a signal sent via Wi-Fi if the main trigger, which uses a SIM card and waits for a mobile phone message to detonate, was blocked by radio-frequency jammers. While Indonesian police now routinely used signal jammers at large public gatherings, thanks to a spate of bombs in recent years, they only disrupt cellphone communications, leaving wireless networking frequencies untouched. Dedi also complained it’s more difficult to jam Wi-Fi signals than cellular, making these Wi-Fi-activated bombs most undesirable, though the spokesman did not go into more detail.

The Next Wave of Immuno-Oncology

The Next Wave of Immuno-Oncology

When cancer cells develop mutations, they may present novel aberrant peptides, but often the malignant cell and other elements of the tumor dampen the T cell response by interfering with the molecular network that regulates how the T cell functions. At Adaptimmune, we utilize our unique SPEAR (specific peptide enhanced affinity receptor) T cell platform to engineer TCRs so that they can recognize cancer proteins on solid tumors. Adaptimmune’s SPEAR T cell therapy targeting a protein called NY-ESO, now transitioned to GlaxoSmithKline, has shown efficacy in two unique sarcoma types—both very difficult-to-treat solid tumors.

This Old House: The Rare Home-Improvement Show That Spotlights Skilled Workers

Now in its 40th season, the PBS home-improvement show This Old House feels like the TV equivalent of New England clam chowder: hearty, wholesome, and old-school. Every program on HGTV arguably owes its existence to This Old House, which first turned home renovation and real estate into television. These newer programs often unfold like reality TV–esque hero’s journeys, with the hosts figuring as creative geniuses who marshal old or otherwise sad houses through a rapid-fire rehabilitation and beautification process.
