Generic Drugs May Not Be As Safe Or Effective As Thought

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration states that it holds foreign plants to the same standards as U.S. drugmakers, but Eban’s new book, Bottle of Lies, challenges that notion. She writes that the FDA often announces its overseas inspections weeks in advance, which allows plants where generic drugs are made the chance to fabricate data and results. But what Hatch-Waxman did that really ignited the generic-drug revolution is it gave the companies an incentive: The incentive was called “first to file,” and it said if you are the first company to submit your application — and literally first by the minute or the second — and you get approved, you’re going to get six months of exclusivity on the market to be the lead and only generic, and you’re probably going to be able to sell your drugs at about 80 percent of the brand-name price.

One of the keys to Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is exploring how different technologies and configurations of aircraft will perform in the urban environment. NASA’s newest modular unmanned aerial system, the Langley Aerodrome #8 (LA-8), is a testbed to investigate these technologies. The LA-8 recently completed its first wind tunnel test; the data can help the private sector accelerate the Urban Air Mobility effort.

MicroG – Re-implementation of proprietary Android apps and libraries

MicroG – Re-implementation of proprietary Android apps and libraries

At this point, several popular open-source applications already require some of Google’s proprietary libraries to be installed. Increasing demand in the free software community in addition to severe problems in Google’s proprietary software discovered by the Android modding community, have led to the development of a free software clone of Google’s proprietary core libraries and applications – the microG Project was born. Service Core (GmsCore) is a library app, providing the functionality required to run apps that use Google Play Services or Google Maps Android API (v2).

Geoff Ralston taking over as President of YC

I’m delighted to announce that Geoff Ralston is taking over for me as President of YC. I’ve known Geoff for almost ten years, he’s been a YC partner for eight, and I think he’s one of the most thoughtful, helpful, and kind investors in Silicon Valley. And I’m very thankful that YC will be in such good hands with Geoff–I care about YC more than I thought I’d care about any organization.

GDPR adtech complaints keep stacking up in Europe

GDPR adtech complaints keep stacking up in Europe

All the complaints argue that RTB entails “wide-scale and systemic” breaches of Europe’s data protection regime, as personal date harvested to profile Internet users for ad-targeting purposes is broadcast widely to bidders in the adtech chain. The Irish DPC, which Google has sought to designate the lead watchdog for its European business, has said it will prioritize scrutiny of the adtech sector in 2019, referencing the RTB complaints in its annual report earlier this year — where it warned the industry: “the protection of personal data is a prerequisite to the processing of any personal data within this ecosystem and ultimately the sector must comply with the standards set down by the GDPR”. So far the same RTB complaints have not been filed in France and Germany — jurisdictions with privacy watchdogs that can have a reputation for some of the most muscular action enforcing data protection in Europe.

What Should We Do to Prevent Software from Failing?

What Should We Do to Prevent Software from Failing?

The critical software and technical systems we rely on daily are like invisible skyscrapers all around us — yet we often don’t know who designed them, how they were constructed, or whether they hide defects that could lead to massive inconvenience, financial chaos, or catastrophic failures. To help prevent other catastrophes, industries that provide critical products and services built with rapidly evolving hardware and software need to consider how they can ensure their businesses have a level of digital resiliency that justifies the trust society has placed in them. Except in rare cases, such as the platforms used in the airline industry and the space program, no professional engineer or architect signs off on the plans for critical computer programs and hardware platforms, and no government inspector certifies them for use.

Another dubious claim that someone has “decoded” the Voynich manuscript

Another dubious claim that someone has “decoded” the Voynich manuscript

The Voynich manuscript is a famous medieval text written in a mysterious language that so far has proven to be undecipherable. There are so many competing theories about what the Voynich manuscript is—most likely a compendium of herbal remedies and astrological readings, based on the bits reliably decoded thus far—and so many claims to have deciphered the text, that it’s practically its own subfield of medieval studies. I am not a medieval (Vulgar) Latin expert, so I can’t comment on the plausibility of individual words,” said Greg Kondrak, a natural language processing expert at the University of Alberta who has used AI to try and decode the Voynich manuscript.

‘Earthworm Dilemma’ Has Climate Scientists Racing to Keep Up

‘Earthworm Dilemma’ Has Climate Scientists Racing to Keep Up

Erin K. Cameron, an environmental scientist at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, who studies the boreal incursion of earthworms, found that 99.8 percent of the earthworms in her study area in Alberta belonged Dendrobaena octaedra , an invasive species that eats leaf litter but doesn’t burrow into the soil. If Dr. Cameron’s calculations bear out, it means the lowly earthworm stands to alter the carbon balance of the planet by adding to the load in the atmosphere. The global boreal forest is a muscular part of Earth’s carbon cycle; at least one-fifth of the carbon that cycles through air, soil and oceans passes through the boreal , said Sylvie Quideau, a soil biogeochemist at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
