U.S. put nuclear waste under a dome on a Pacific island. Now it’s cracking open

“I’ve just been with the president of the Marshall Islands [Hilda Heine], who is very worried because there is a risk of leaking of radioactive materials that are contained in a kind of coffin in the area,” Guterres said in Fiji, Agence France-Presse reported. Beginning in 1977, the Defense Nuclear Agency began a sustained cleanup of the nuclear debris left over on Enewetak Atoll, a slender ring of coral islands in the Marshall Islands’ northwestern corner. But the deal also settled “all claims, past, present and future” tied to the nuclear testing and left the dome in the care of the island government.

Naked mole-rats: A case study in biological weirdness

Naked mole-rats: A case study in biological weirdness

Like bees, ants, and termites, naked mole-rats have a single breeding “queen” in each colony, and other “worker” individuals exist in castes that perform specific tasks. Around 1981 and the next decade, naked mole-rats – a perfect match for his predictions – were found to be eusocial. (This would also explain why only mole-rats in captivity have had tumors, since they’re kept at atmospheric oxygen levels.)

Interactive exploration of earnings by age and industry (2018)

When we think of dead-end jobs, we think of the following qualities:

While legal occupations may stick out because they’re in a league of their own when it comes to income, we focused on the other end of the spectrum – that bottom rung of industries that experience little to no career progression over their lifetime. Workers in this industry experience only a 30% pay increase over their careers. Workers in this industry experience only a 34% pay increase from ages 25 to 60.

MicroG – free and open source alternative to Android Google services

At this point, several popular open-source applications already require some of Google’s proprietary libraries to be installed. Increasing demand in the free software community in addition to severe problems in Google’s proprietary software discovered by the Android modding community, have led to the development of a free software clone of Google’s proprietary core libraries and applications – the microG Project was born. Service Core (GmsCore) is a library app, providing the functionality required to run apps that use Google Play Services or Google Maps Android API (v2).

Tesla: Insane or Clever

Tesla: Insane or Clever

“I feel very confident predicting 1 million autonomous robo-taxis for Tesla next year,”When Elon Musk utters these words at Tesla’s Autonomy Day late April, a song plays inside my head: They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa! In Musk’s “different” mind, an overnight Over The Air software update transforms a million Tesla cars out in the field into Full Self Drive (FSD) vehicles by the end of next year. Tesla’s manufacturing operations might not be the smoothest in the industry, but it controls all of the hardware and software layers in its product, something no other major car maker seems to be able to do.

Getting my personal data out of Facebook

Getting my personal data out of Facebook

The latest email I received from Facebook confirms that they are with their earlier statement that— and I paraphrase— they cannot give me my data, because the average person is too dumb to understand simple things like their location history . Facebook has a Download Your Information tool, which is part of their aforementioned smoke and mirrors strategy to give people the feeling that they can always obtain their data (and to fake goodwill toward the to make it seem they respect ). However, one of the creative legal geniuses at Facebook came up with this gem:

In other words: you are too stupid to understand your own data, and this includes things like your location and which device you have used when.
