A Man Who Built the Bauhaus

A Man Who Built the Bauhaus

The future-facing idiom of the Bauhaus, the German design school founded, in 1919, by Walter Gropius, is now antique, but its distinct vision of modern life is not a thing of the past. Fiona MacCarthy’s “Gropius: The Man Who Built the Bauhaus” (Harvard) is a comprehensive biography of the figure whom the painter Paul Klee, a teacher at the Bauhaus, called “the silver prince.” Gropius fused the city’s arts-and-crafts school and its fine-arts academy under a new name, the Bauhaus, which he adapted from the Bauhütte, the medieval stone mason’s guild.

What I learned as a VC filling in as a startup CEO for 4 months

Talk to employees outside of the executive team to understand their view of the strategy and use this feedback to help the CEO drive buy-in across the organization. People are the other half

When I stepped into the CEO role, I hoped to gain the team’s trust and belief in my commitment to the company, our employees, and our customers.

Nets on the outlets of drainage pipes save waterways from pollution

Nets on the outlets of drainage pipes save waterways from pollution

This past summer authorities from the Australian city of Kwinana installed a new filtration system in the Henley Reserve. The city authorities started by installing 2 nets and were amazed at the results — their new filtration system managed to catch more than 800 pounds of garbage within several weeks. This new filtration system proves once again that small things matter and that focusing on them can have a big and positive impact on the environment and humanity in general.

Leaving Google Fi

If I canceled my account I would also lose all access to customer support since Google Fi doesn’t have a public email or phone. After a few days I received my next monthly bill, the first one to include charges for my new phone. Apparently Google Fi provides a three week window where customers can return a phone if they don’t like it for whatever reason.

San Miguel de Allende is about 170 miles northwest of Mexico City on a mile-high plateau where the sunshine coaxes bougainvillea to erupt in blazing colors and spill over walls.

WebAssembly in Redex

WebAssembly in Redex

The basic process is to take the formal grammars and rules presented in an operational semantics and transcribe them as programs written in a specialized modeling language. The desire for a “a compact program representation” (Hass et al.) led to a stack-based design, in contrast to the simple nested expression language I gave as an example earlier. To provide a starting point for explaining the Redex model, here’s a screenshot of the grammar of wasm from Hass et al’s paper:

This formal grammar can be transcribed straightforwardly as a BNF-style language definition, as explained in the previous section.

Tech Jobs Lead to the Middle Class, But Not for the Masses

Year Up “embodies strong forms of what we know makes sense and seems to work,” said David Fein, principal investigator for Pathways for Advancing Careers and Education, a multiyear evaluation of training and education programs. Year Up and the colleges share space, people, training courses and best practices. In the last few years, some have dropped that hurdle for certain occupations, responding to a tight job market, calls for diversity and the success of programs like Year Up.
