How to Do Hard Things

How to Do Hard Things

This is a system I only somewhat tongue in cheek refer to as “The Fully General System For Learning To Do Hard Things”. I don’t always explicitly follow it, but I often find that when I’ve succeeded my success comes from implicitly following it, and almost every time someone asks me for advice on learning to do things I just describe a specialised version of the system to them. When you know what success looks like but cannot currently achieve it, the system works as follows:

The reason this works much better than just practicing the hard thing is because it gives you a much more direct feedback loop.

Measuring the system clock frequency using loops (Intel and ARM)

Measuring the system clock frequency using loops (Intel and ARM)

In my previous post, Bitset decoding on Apple’s A12, I showed that Apple’s latest ARM-based processor can decode set bits out of a stream of words using 3 cycles per set bit. At best, this can run in one subtraction per cycle and Intel processors are good enough to achieve this rate:

In fact, Intel processors fuse the two instruction (dec and jnz) into a single microinstruction and they have special optimizations for tight loops. On the Apple A12, I do not need to do anything sophisticated to measure the frequency as I consistently get 2.5 GHz with a simple tight loop after I have stressed the processor enough.

UXY tool also wraps some common UNIX tools and exports their output in UXY format. UXY format is designed with the following requirements in mind:

All UXY tools take input from stdin and write the result to stdout. Wraps ps tool and outputs the results in UXY format.

Reckless Loans Devastated a Generation of Taxi Drivers

Walter Rabin, who led Capital One’s medallion lending division between 2007 and 2012 and has led Signature Bank’s medallion lending division since, said he was one of the industry’s most conservative lenders. “It’s the City of New York that took the biggest advantage of the drivers,” said Joseph J. DePaolo, the president and chief executive of Signature. New York Commercial Bank said in a statement that it began issuing medallion loans before the housing crisis and that they were a very small part of its business.

Solid Principles: A Software Developer’s Framework to Robust, Maintainable Code

Solid Principles: A Software Developer’s Framework to Robust, Maintainable Code

The SOLID principles are a set of software design principles that teach us how we can structure our functions and classes to be as robust, maintainable and flexible as possible. Design Tip: If we see lots of code in switch statements, that should be a signal to us of a potential refactoring from a statement to several classes. Being able to design your software so that the minimum amount of code needs to change in order to take it from point A to point B.

To do this, we write interfaces and abstract classes in order to dictate the higher-level policy that needs to be implemented, and then we implement that policy using concrete classes.

A Tale of Query Optimization

A Tale of Query Optimization

Using the platform, you can make arbitrarily complex queries on large data sets. The clause in the original query is:

Which means that we do pattern matching on our URLs, then take an intersection with all the urls common with the recordings. Simple check was to simple do a on both the slow and fast queries on many different sets of data.

Updates to Works with Nest

Updates to Works with Nest

Last week we announced that we would stop supporting the Works with Nest (WWN) program on August 31, 2019 and transition to the Works with Google Assistant platform (WWGA). First, we’re committed to supporting the integrations you value and minimizing disruptions during this transition, so here’s our updated plan for retiring WWN:
Your existing devices and integrations will continue working with your Nest Account, however you won’t have access to new features that will be available with a Google Account. Once your WWN functionality is available on the WWGA platform you can migrate with minimal disruption from a Nest Account to a Google Account.

A trip to Amarna, the desert city of Akhenaten

A trip to Amarna, the desert city of Akhenaten

In the late third century, after Christianity had swept across Egypt, there were two famous instances in which a wealthy young Egyptian left his comfortable Nile valley home for a life of prayer and loneliness in the desert. About 1346 BC, in Upper Egypt, the pharaoh Akhenaten founded a new capital on a previously uninhabited shelf of desert above the river’s eastern bank. Major cities had always been situated in the river valley, and when kings built mortuary temples and monuments, they favoured desert sites that were already sanctified by graves of the ancients.

Supdate – A Clojure library for transforming nested data structures

Supdate – A Clojure library for transforming nested data structures

is a small Clojure/ClojureScript library for transforming nested data structures in a straightforward and efficient way. lets you express nested transformations as data structures which match the schema of the input, and then executes these transformations efficiently. It will avoid doing several ‘deep dives’ in the data, doing all it has to do once at a given path.

Australia Found a Way to Save Water from Plastic Pollution

Australia Found a Way to Save Water from Plastic Pollution

This past summer authorities from the Australian city of Kwinana installed a new filtration system in the Henley Reserve. The city authorities started by installing 2 nets and were amazed at the results — their new filtration system managed to catch more than 800 pounds of garbage within several weeks. This new filtration system proves once again that small things matter and that focusing on them can have a big and positive impact on the environment and humanity in general.
