OPP (Other People’s Problems)

OPP (Other People’s Problems)

You see so many problems, and when you identify those problems, people sometimes get mad. You should expect that you will need to get feedback and revise your plan, and the amount of feedback and revision required will be directly related to how big the problem is, how many people it impacts, and how controversial the fix you’re proposing is. That is a good sign that it’s time to find a new job, preferably somewhere that is more in tune with your way of doing things.

Why is it faster to process a sorted array than an unsorted array? (2012)

Why is it faster to process a sorted array than an unsorted array? (2012)

But in computers, the processor doesn’t know which direction a branch will go until the last moment. So modern branch predictors will typically achieve >90% hit rates. This is very friendly to the branch predictor since the branch consecutively goes the same direction many times.

Translating an ARM iOS App to Intel macOS Using Bitcode

Translating an ARM iOS App to Intel macOS Using Bitcode

Well, bitcode with a small b- is an architecture-specific intermediate representation used by LLVM, and capital-B Bitcode pertains to a set of features allowing you to embed this representation in your Mach-O binary and the mechanisms by which you can provide it to Apple in your App Store submissions. Well, as you can see, Apple could use Bitcode to translate every Bitcode-enabled app on the Mac App Store, without consulting developers, so it would be ready to go on day one. Obviously, we’re not there yet: Apple doesn’t enable Bitcode for submissions to the Mac App Store today, and today’s Bitcode may not be ideal for such an architectural translation.

Account Hijacking Forum OGusers Hacked

com — a forum popular among people involved in hijacking online accounts and conducting SIM swapping attacks to seize control over victims’ phone numbers — has itself been hacked, exposing the email addresses, hashed passwords, IP addresses and private messages for nearly 113,000 forum users. On May 12, the administrator of OGusers explained an outage to forum members by saying a hard drive failure had erased several months’ worth of private messages, forum posts and prestige points, and that he’d restored a backup from January 2019. Little did the administrators of OGusers know at the time, but that May 12 incident coincided with the theft of the forum’s user database, and the wiping of forum hard drives.

Israeli firm linked to WhatsApp spyware attack faces lawsuit

Israeli firm linked to WhatsApp spyware attack faces lawsuit

NSO Group, founded in 2010, supplies industry-leading surveillance software to governments that it says is for tackling terrorism and serious crime, and has been licensed to dozens of countries including Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Bahrain and the UAE. The Israeli government’s Defence Export Controls Agency has failed to exercise proper oversight “despite serious allegations of abuse”, the affidavit claimed, adding: “Because of DECA’s inaction, NSO Group can continue to sell its software to governments known to target human rights defenders.” The lengthy reply to Amnesty, signed by Peel, claimed that in “almost all” the cases of complaints of human rights abuse raised, the alleged victim of hacking had not been a target or the government in question had acted with “due lawful authority”.

Mass grave in Poland embodies the violent beginning of the Bronze Age

Mass grave in Poland embodies the violent beginning of the Bronze Age

“We have other mass graves and evidence of violence from this period, so it seems that Koszyce was not a single rare event,” Morten Erik Allentoft of the Natural History Museum of Denmark told Ars Technica. Like most people living in Central Europe at the time, the Globular Amphora group were probably cattle herders who moved across the landscape as the seasons changed. The DNA sequences allowed the archaeologists to calculate the relationships between every pair of individuals in the group, and they found four nuclear families, mostly mothers and their children (fathers, and adult males in general, were conspicuously absent from the grave).

US pastor runs network giving 50k Ugandans bleach-based ‘miracle cure’

The network, led by pastor Robert Baldwin and part-funded by Sam Little from Arlesey in Bedfordshire, is one of the most extensive efforts yet to distribute the “miracle cure” known as MMS, or “miracle mineral solution”. Little has posted a video online of a trip he made on 11 March to a village hospital in Kyenjojo district, in western Uganda, where he conducted a trial that he said would prove malaria could be cured with chlorine dioxide within two hours. He told the Guardian he was repeating the study on HIV/Aids patients in several locations in Uganda, to prove that MMS was also a cure for that disease.
