Peermaps

Instead of fetching data from a centralized tile service, your computer fetches map data from other peers across the network. As you download map data from your peers, your computer saves that data locally so that you can share it with other people who ask for it. We’ve secured funding to improve our initial prototypes and develop new components for a fully p2p web-based map viewer to display OpenStreetMap data with rolling updates.

Guide to Deep Work

Guide to Deep Work

Newport describes four different types of deep work scheduling you can choose from:
The four deep work scheduling philosophies: monastic, bimodal, rhythmic, and journalisticAll four of these philosophies have their pros and cons that should be carefully considered:
The Monastic Philosophy of Deep Work Scheduling is the most dedicated form of deep work and involves spending all of your working hours on a singular high-level focus. In this case, Newport suggests enacting a “grand gesture”:
“By leveraging a radical change to your normal environment, coupled perhaps with a significant investment of effort or money, all dedicated toward supporting a deep work task, you increase the perceived importance of the task.” A popular example of this deep work tactic is Bill Gates’ famous “think week”, where he spends two weeks alone at his cottage, twice a year, reading and thinking about the future of Microsoft.

Black – Uncompromising Python code formatter

Black – Uncompromising Python code formatter

If the contents of the matching brackets pair are comma-separated (like an argument list, or a dict literal, and so on) then Black will first try to keep them on the same line with the matching brackets. Black will allow single empty lines inside functions, and single and double empty lines on module level left by the original editors, except when they’re within parenthesized expressions. If you are adopting Black in a large project with pre-existing string conventions (like the popular “single quotes for data, double quotes for human-readable strings”), you can pass on the command line.

Internet Data Is Rotting

Internet Data Is Rotting

The data was valuable to MySpace; the users’ content less so. MySpace is a social networking media site where performers could upload music or other content for access and distribution to its user community. By 2008, MySpace was the leading social networking site, valued at one time at US$12 billion But it declined in popularity – thanks to an overprevalence of ads, concerns about exposure of minors to sexual content and other issues.

Leonardo Da Vinci’s To-Do List Proves He’s a True Renaissance Man

So what would a to-do list look like for Da Vinci? Robert Krulwich of NPR translated one of Leonardo Da Vinci’s lists from the early 1490s, and there was much more on his mind than walking the dog or tending to the garden. Here’s the translation, with Krulwich’s amendments in brackets:

Da Vinci’s list demonstrates just how curious he was, whether learning about astronomy or how to ice skate.

Understanding real-world concurrency bugs in Go

Understanding real-world concurrency bugs in Go

The analysis begins by studying how these applications actually make use of Go concurrency primitives, before going on to study concurrency related bugs from their issue trackers. These bugs are categorised on two main dimensions: the observed behaviour (blocking or non-blocking), and the type of concurrency primitive that is the cause (shared memory or message passing). There are also several bugs caused by a lack of understanding of Go language features, especially the sharing of local variables declared before an anonymous function used in a goroutine, and the semantics of WaitGroups.

Who killed Olof Palme?

Who killed Olof Palme?

On the last night of February 1986, the Swedish prime minister Olof Palme and his wife, Lisbet, were strolling home through downtown Stockholm. On the night of the killing, when word of Palme’s death reached Claes Löfgren, a journalist for the Swedish national broadcaster SVT, he was in a restaurant. In 2010, Sweden removed the statute of limitations on murders, specifically so that investigators could continue their search for Palme’s killer for as long as it takes.
