Yes, Determinists, There Is Free Will

A free-will skeptic argues, first, that free will requires one or more properties: intentional, goal-directed agency; alternative possibilities—that it must be possible for me to do otherwise; or causal control over our actions. For instance, some neuroscientists and philosophers such as Patricia and Paul Churchland say we should understand human behavior not so much at the cognitive, psychological level where we invoke explicit mental states, goals, intentions, and purposes, but rather at a lower level of description, as the product of biophysical processes in the brain. I am quite happy to concede that free will requires intentional agency, alternative possibilities among which we can choose, and causation of our actions by our mental states.

Driverless electric truck starts deliveries on Swedish public road

JONKOPING, Sweden (Reuters) – Resembling the helmet of a Star Wars stormtrooper, a driverless electric truck began daily freight deliveries on a public road in Sweden on Wednesday, in what developer Einride and logistics customer DB Schenker described as a world first. Einride’s T-Pod is 26 tonnes when full and does not have a driver cabin, which it estimates reduces road freight operating costs by around 60 percent versus a diesel truck with a driver. Besides Schenker, Einride has orders from German grocer Lidl, Swedish delivery company Svenska Retursystem and five Fortune 500 retail companies, underpinning its ambition to have 200 vehicles in operation by the end of 2020.

Intel Tried to Bribe Dutch University to Suppress Knowledge of MDS Vulnerability

Cybersecurity researchers at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, also known as VU Amsterdam, allege that Intel tried to bribe them to suppress knowledge of the latest processor security vulnerability RIDL (rouge in-flight data load), which the company made public on May 14. The team politely refused both offers.Intel’s security vulnerability bounty program is shrouded in CYA agreements designed to minimize Intel’s losses from the discovery of a new vulnerability. With public knowledge withheld, Intel can work on mitigation and patches against the vulnerability.

Lilium unveils five-seater air taxi prototype after a successful maiden flight

Lilium, the Munich-based startup developing an on-demand “air taxi” service, has unveiled a new five-seater prototype and is announcing to the world that a maiden flight for the new device was successfully completed earlier this month. It’s not the first time a Lilium Jet — the company’s all-electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) device — has taken to the sky but it is the first time the new five seater has taken off and landed, following extensive ground testing. The new five-seater is a full-scale, full-weight prototype that is powered by 36 all-electric jet engines to allow it to take-off and land vertically, while achieving “remarkably efficient horizontal or cruise flight,” says Lilium

In a call, Lilium co-founder and CEO Daniel Wiegand described the test flight, which was a little behind schedule, as a huge step towards making urban air mobility a reality.

Why is a Rust executable large? (2016)

Why is a Rust executable large? (2016)

You remember that Rust is probably the sole language that may possibly displace C++, and C++ is noted for its code bloat; would that mean Rust failed to fix one of C++’s big problems? Before looking at more obscure areas, this is perfect time to admit that I was cheating with the size of C and C++ binaries. The fair (well, fairer) comparison would be as follows:

Also, the Rust binary needs to be rebuilt:

Okay, so it seems that Rust was actually far, far better than C and C++.

TXR – A Programming Language for Convenient Data Munging

TXR – A Programming Language for Convenient Data Munging

TXR is a pragmatic, convenient tool ready to take on your daily hacking challenges with its dual personality: its whole-document pattern matching and extraction language for scraping information from arbitrary text sources, and its powerful data-processing language to slice through problems like a hot knife through butter. TXR is a fusion of many different ideas, a few of which are original, and it is influenced by many languages, such as Common Lisp, Scheme, Awk, M4, POSIX Shell, Prolog, Ruby, Python, Arc, Clojure, S-Lang and others. TXR consists of two languages, which can be used separately or tangled together: the TXR Pattern Language, and TXR Lisp.

GopenPGP, an open source encryption library for native applications

GopenPGP, an open source encryption library for native applications

First, we believe more people should have access to encrypted communications, and an easy-to-use encryption library for mobile developers is an important step forward in that mission. Second, the release of GopenPGP paves the way to open sourcing the ProtonMail mobile and desktop apps, which has been a high priority for our team and for our users (our web app has already been open sourced since 2015). GopenPGP (a portmanteau of Go and OpenPGP) is a high-level OpenPGP library that we have developed for use in our own Android and iOS, Bridge, and Import-Export apps, as well as a fork of the golang crypto library, which the high-level library is built on.

We froze the salaries of 20 executives and improved the lives of 500 employees

We froze the salaries of 20 executives and improved the lives of 500 employees

What that meant for our company was that if we just froze the wages of our most senior team – less than 20 executives – we could radically increase the wages and improve the lives of nearly 500 of our teammates. We needed our executive team to buy into a vision of business success where every employee had a fair shot at success. Every business has its unique challenge, but the example of CareCentrix suggests that there is plenty wealth to go around – at the very least, to make sure that the employees we ask so much of can live a healthy and fulfilling life with the wages we pay.

What caused Seattle crane to collapse?

What caused Seattle crane to collapse?

But the possibility that tower bolts or pins were removed early, while the crane was being dismantled in gusty but not exceptional winds, is sure to be a focal point for investigators. But Kwass, who is not representing any parties involved with last month’s collapse, also thinks that the South Lake Union crane had its pins pulled, or at least loosened, all the way down the tower, ahead of time, like the one near Dallas. The UK’s Health and Safety Executive, a government agency, ultimately found that collapse, which killed two workers, was “due to mast section bolts being untightened and left ‘finger tight’ in preparation for dismantling the crane.”
