Lilium unveils electric jet 5 seater air taxi after it’s maiden flight

Lilium, the Munich-based startup developing an on-demand “air taxi” service, has unveiled a new five-seater prototype and is announcing to the world that a maiden flight for the new device was successfully completed earlier this month. It’s not the first time a Lilium Jet — the company’s all-electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) device — has taken to the sky but it is the first time the new five seater has taken off and landed, following extensive ground testing. The new five-seater is a full-scale, full-weight prototype that is powered by 36 all-electric jet engines to allow it to take-off and land vertically, while achieving “remarkably efficient horizontal or cruise flight,” says Lilium

In a call, Lilium co-founder and CEO Daniel Wiegand described the test flight, which was a little behind schedule, as a huge step towards making urban air mobility a reality.

As a result, most of the residents of Tomioka and Namie, two of the largest cities around the damaged power plant may return to their homes. Buildings that were damaged during the earthquake or due to lack of upkeep because the residents had fled from the radiation are still being repaired or torn down. Eight years after the disaster and two after their opening, only about 5% of residents have returned.

Mind-controlled hearing aid allows the wearer to focus on particular voices

Mind-controlled hearing aid allows the wearer to focus on particular voices

Previous work by Mesgarani’s lab found that it is possible to identify which person someone is paying attention to, as their brain activity tracks the sound waves of that voice most closely. The device compares the audio of each speaker to the brain waves of the person wearing the hearing aid. According to Jesal Vishnuram, technology manager at the charity Action on Hearing Loss, said that one of the reasons people find conventional hearing aids unpleasant in noisy environments is that their brain is out of practice at filtering sounds and so does this less effectively.

China’s Rover Reveals Moon’s Hidden Depths

China’s Rover Reveals Moon’s Hidden Depths

Now, a Chinese mission has discovered signs of mantle material at the moon’s surface, effectively setting an “X” on lunar maps for future explorers seeking this not-so-buried geological treasure. “These results seem to reveal that lunar mantle materials might be indeed exposed at the surface of the moon,” says Patrick Pinet from the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Paris, who wrote an accompanying commentary on the findings. If confirmed, this first detection of mantle material on the lunar surface would provide a new window into the structure of the moon.

European Court of Justice: EU employers must track working time in detail

European Court of Justice: EU employers must track working time in detail

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled on Tuesday that EU member states must require employers to set up a system that tracks time worked each day by each employee to ensure labor laws are complied with. “Member States must require employers to set up an objective, reliable and accessible system enabling the duration of time worked each day by each worker to be measured,” the court said in its ruling. “The Court holds that, in the absence of a system enabling the duration of time worked each day by each worker to be measured, it is not possible to determine, objectively and reliably, either the number of hours worked and when that work was done, or the number of hours of overtime worked, which makes it excessively difficult, if not impossible in practice, for workers to ensure that their rights are complied with,” the ECJ said.

The moon may be tectonically active, and geologists are shaken

The moon may be tectonically active, and geologists are shaken

“The whole idea that a 4.6-billion-year-old rocky body like the moon has managed to stay hot enough in the interior and produce this network of faults just flies in the face of conventional wisdom,” says study coauthor Thomas Watters of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Since 2009, Watters has been using images from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter to map thousands of scarps all around the moon. Of the 28 recorded events, eight might have occurred within around 18 miles of a scarp, and six of those happened when the moon was at its farthest point from Earth, just when tidal stresses on the lunar surface should peak.

Digital Doppelgängers Fool Advanced Anti-Fraud Tech

Digital Doppelgängers Fool Advanced Anti-Fraud Tech

The latest such advance is the rise of digital doppelgängers—virtual entities that mimic real user behaviors authentic enough to fool advanced anti-fraud algorithms. The price depended on the value of the purchased profile—for example, a digital mask that included a full user profile with bank login information would cost more than just a browser fingerprint. Digital masks are unique combinations of a user’s device fingerprint (a mix of device ID, hardware, operating system, IP address, screen resolution, firmware versions, browser, browser plug-ins, time zone, GPU information, WebRTC IPs, TCP/IP fingerprint, cookies, and much more) and their personal behavioral attributes (time spent at specific online stores, interest-related behavior, mouse/touch screen behavior, etc.).

The Curse of Genius

The Curse of Genius

Like many gifted children, Tom’s childhood has often been unhappy. Some countries value extremely high intelligence more than others and offer specific educational provision for such children. But Lyn Kendall, a consultant on gifted children at Mensa – who was herself a gifted child in a working-class family – insists that reading Nietzsche to your five-year-old, or forcing them to do three hours of extra homework, cannot “make” a genius.

Scientists Created Bacteria with a Synthetic Genome. Is This Artificial Life?

Scientists Created Bacteria with a Synthetic Genome. Is This Artificial Life?

Scientists have created a living organism whose DNA is entirely hu man-made — perhaps a new form of life, experts said, and a milestone in the field of synthetic biology. Researchers at the University of Cambridge on Wednesday reported that they had rewritten the DNA of the bacteria Escherichia coli, fashioning a synthetic genome four times larger and far more complex than any previously created. These synthetic bacteria also may offer clues as to how the genetic code arose in the early history of life.
