Massimiliano Fedriga, governor of the northern Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia and a senior official in the anti-migrant Northern League party, was mocked on social media after he admitted catching the disease. Two years ago Mr Fedriga opposed a law making inoculations for six illnesses, including chickenpox and measles, obligatory after a sharp increase in measles led to fatalities following the spread online of conspiracy theories linking vaccines to autism.
