Defining QUIC (and HTTP/3)

QUIC (that’s not an acronym) is a brand-new internet transport protocol, replacing the most commonly used transport today, TCP. TCP provides a way for clients and servers to communicate reliably in the face of packet loss, share resources gracefully between applications, and ensure that data is delivered in the same order it was sent. These benefits come from QUIC’s latency optimized handshake, better loss recovery, and, importantly, from bypassing bugs and inefficiencies in TCP and in the internet ecosystem that’s built around TCP.
