Eley says that there may be evolutionary reasons for people to develop shy personality traits. Google is planning changes in Chrome impacting ad blocker extensions and people are wondering whether those changes are motivated by self-interest or whether there are plausible benign explanations. The change to by itself would completely break ad blockers, privacy-focused extensions and so on, so Google is adding a new API, called . In context of the proposed extension changes, the most benign assumption I can come up with is that of distant indifference by Google towards ad blockers: they do not see the value in them, but they are aware that lots of users like them, so some minimal efforts are made to let them exist in some form.

And it’s with that in mind that I recently tested the waters of the upgrade arbitrage market, in an effort to build a workable home computer that I could use when I wanted a little more graphical oomph or I wanted to mess with some experiments. To put it simply: Back when a computer or similar product was originally released, it was prohibitively expensive for many consumers, while also being significantly more powerful than anything the average consumer could buy, anyway. If a six-year-old workstation can get you within shouting distance of a modern consumer-grade computer for a lower price, even with a little not-made-for-the-home weirdness, you’re coming out ahead while wringing additional value from something that otherwise wouldn’t be worth very much.

A congressional proposal that would overturn a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that barred the patenting of human genes and ease other restrictions on patenting software and biomedical inventions is drawing fierce criticism from some scientific societies and patient advocates. In particular, critics point to three recent rulings:

The new bill “makes it clear in no uncertain terms that all the Supreme Court [decisions] are just gone,” says Arti Rai, a patent law expert at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. As you can tell, the init function is creating the SDL window, also assigns its pointer to the window variable in the given Graphics structure. This code initializes the SDL engine with it’s video stuff (that’s what SDL_INIT_VIDEO means) and assures that it ran properly, breaking the execution if it didn’t and freeing the state manager before exiting the program. A House committee on Tuesday restored to pending legislation a ban on altering the genomes of human embryos intended for pregnancies, despite calls from some scientists to lift the ban and allow the Food and Drug Administration to review applications for new technologies. Some scientists had called on Congress to modify the legislation to allow so-called three-parent embryos but maintain the ban on the direct editing of embryonic DNA. , who chaired the subcommittee that approved the bill without the ban last month, said he wanted Congress to discuss allowing MRT, “but today is not that time, and this appropriations committee markup is not that place.”
