Antonio Salieri’s Revenge

Antonio Salieri’s Revenge

A German-language biography of Salieri, by the composer and musicologist Timo Jouko Herrmann, was published earlier this year. Lorenzo Da Ponte, the master librettist of “The Marriage of Figaro,” “Don Giovanni,” and “Così Fan Tutte,” heaped praise on Mozart’s music in his memoirs, but his evocation of Salieri’s personality was fonder in tone: “a most cultivated and intelligent man . . . whom I loved and esteemed both out of gratitude and by inclination . . . more than a friend, a brother to me.” Of the early Salieri operas that have returned to circulation, perhaps the finest is “La Scuola de’ Gelosi” (“The School of the Jealous”), which was first heard in Venice in 1778 and which conquered Vienna in 1783.

‘Orientalism,’ Then and Now

‘Orientalism,’ Then and Now

With Orientalism, Said wanted to open a discussion about the way the Arab-Islamic world had been imagined by the West—not to prevent a clear-eyed reckoning with the region’s problems, of which he was all too painfully aware. And the aim of Orientalism as a system of representations, sometimes explicit, more often implicit, was to produce an Other, the better to secure the stability and supremacy of the Western self. Orientalism is, at its core, a critique of the expert, the producer of knowledge about the Arab-Islamic world, from Flaubert and Montesquieu to Bernard Lewis and Daniel Pipes.

Interview with DuckDuckGo CEO Gabe Weinberg

Interview with DuckDuckGo CEO Gabe Weinberg

DuckDuckGo offers a privacy-minded search engine that has about 1 percent of the search market share in the US (Google’s share is more than 88 percent), as well as a free browser extension for Firefox and Google Chrome that blocks ad networks from tracking you. But there’s been no real proof that that is really better, and it’s arguably way worse for the publishers who then have ceded all sorts of money to Facebook and …

Talk about that shift to behavioral advertising, because when you did it … Years ago, at Google, also there used to be a ticker that used to run across when you entered Google about what people were searching for at that moment, and they stripped it of dirty stuff, which was quite a bit, apparently. Slowly, publishers ceded some of their page over to it, and then Google ended up having all this behavioral data, so if you searched for something, you could then follow people around with that search.

Apple dismisses Google’s criticism over turning privacy into a ‘luxury good’

Apple dismisses Google’s criticism over turning privacy into a ‘luxury good’

Apple’s software chief, Craig Federighi, says he doesn’t “buy into” the criticism that Apple is turning privacy into a luxury good, an accusation that was indirectly leveled at the company by Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The argument stems over the difference in business models between the two companies: Apple sells generally high-priced hardware directly to customers, so it doesn’t need to collect much data on them; while Google offers a multitude of free services to users, primarily profiting off of ads displayed on those services that are often targeted based on user data. In the interview, Federighi also addressed two other criticisms of Apple’s privacy stance: that it shouldn’t be storing Chinese’ users iCloud data in China, where the country could spy on it; and that its choice not to collect much user data has made it fall behind when it comes to develop AI features, like Siri.

Why Not to Build a Time-Series Database

Why Not to Build a Time-Series Database

Without going into the full detail of the challenges we hit, here is a summary:

In the end, after investing a lot of time and resources, we did the other engineering solution that teams take to solve scaling issues, and essentially sharded all our largest customers onto separate DalmtainerDB clusters. When we decided to move off DalmatinerDB in 2017 and redesign our architecture from the ground up to ensure we didn’t hit the same scaling and performance issues again, we made two critical decisions that helped us design the new TSDB architecture:

We performed another evaluation of all the TSDBs out there, looking again at InfluxDB, but also newer solutions that had appeared since 2015 such as Beringei (Gorrilla DB) from Facebook and Atlas from Netflix. This solves a lot of complexity and performance issues as the volume of metrics grows, but requires a lot more tooling to manage Atlas at scale.

It’s 2059, and the Rich Kids Are Still Winning

It’s 2059, and the Rich Kids Are Still Winning

But these explanations are unnecessary when one realizes the fundamental mistake underlying the Gene Equality Project: Cognitive enhancements are useful only when you live in a society that rewards ability, and the United States isn’t one. The fact that affluent parents believe that genetic enhancements will improve their children’s prospects is a sign of this: They believe that ability will lead to success because they assume that their own success was a result of their ability. But low-income families living in neighborhoods with underfunded public schools often cannot sustain this feedback loop; the Gene Equality Project didn’t offer any resources besides better genes, and without these additional resources, the full potential of those genes was never realized.

An unpaid UK researcher saved the Japanese seaweed industry (2017)

An unpaid UK researcher saved the Japanese seaweed industry (2017)

In the summer, the leafy green seaweed sent out spores that collected and grew as the pink sludge in shells. Thanks to Drew-Baker’s work, Segawa was able to invent the industrial process that lead to the stable, predictable production of nori, for which everyone with a taste for sushi should be grateful. To encourage the spores to grow into their single-celled stage, farmers import shells from oyster fisheries, string them on fishing line, and hang them in huge vats of water that reproduce the ideal environment for the pink sludge to grow.

Fancy Euclid’s “Elements” in TeX

Fancy Euclid’s “Elements” in TeX

The main feature of this book is that instead of ordinary letter designations such as “triangle ABC,” it employs inclusions of miniature pictures directly in the text, that is, for example, an image of a triangle. Their use looks somewhat like this:

\defineNewPicture{ % Inside this thing you put the construction
pair A, B, C, D; % MetaPost has a special type of variables for coordinates
numeric d;
d := 2u;
A := (0, 0); %
B := A shifted (d, 0); % Point coordinates are set here
C := A shifted (0, -d); %
D := A shifted (d, -d); %
byAngleDefine(B, A, C, byblack, 0); % These define angles:
byAngleDefine(D, B, A, byblue, 0); % first—angle points,
byAngleDefine(C, D, B, byred, 0); % then color,
byAngleDefine(A, C, D, byyellow, 0); % then style. These include correct recognition of line segment and angle synonyms, automatic letter placement around polygon groups, and other stuff like that.
