Data from the seismometers, retrieved by the expedition this month, show a tightly clustered region of earthquake activity, ranging from 20 to 50 kilometers deep in Earth’s crust. Most submarine volcanoes are found along midocean ridges, where tectonic plates in Earth’s crust slowly spread apart, allowing magma from relatively shallow magma chambers to ooze up in rifts. The continuing earthquake activity, now much closer to the island, along with the possibility of a tsunami triggered by an undersea landslide from the flank of the new volcano have both alarmed the population.

A classic information retrieval way to evaluate how good such a system performs offline would be something akin to mean average precision (MAP) or normalized discounted cumulative gain (NDCG) where you store historical user interactions, and validate your system by verifying whether the algorithm places the items a user interacted with at the top of the recommendations. In user-interactive systems, it is generally easy to collect a dataset where the is what a system knows about the user and their intent, is the item recommended to user by some “algorithm” , and is the reward (like/view/dislike) that a user provides to the system. With this data, IPS gives us unbiased estimates of the performance of any algorithm with:

Where is the propensity for item to be recommended to user for a new different algorith .

We implemented a new http endpoint on the IPFS gateway which allows you to proxy a http request to any target IPFS instance (who is listening) using these p2p streams. This has threefold benefits: first it allows users to do private lookups for friends’ public keys without announcing to the network who they are looking up; second, it makes the whole system much more scalable – you only need to contact the real pki when you are signing up, or changing your identity or storage server; and third it improves resiliency, if the pki server were to permanently be taken down the network could move to a new one without any loss of data. Every directory or 5 MiB section (chunk) of a file requires a unique capability to access it consisting of:

Here the owner and signer are (hashes of) public signing keys, label is a random 32 byte label, and the read and write base keys are symmetric keys.

Tennessee-based Perceptics prides itself as “the sole provider of stationary LPRs [license plate readers] installed at all land border crossing lanes for POV [privately owned vehicle] traffic in the United States, Canada, and for the most critical lanes in Mexico.” In fact, Perceptics recently announced, in a pact with Unisys Federal Systems, it had landed “a key contract by US Customs and Border Protection to replace existing LPR technology, and to install Perceptics next generation License Plate Readers (LPRs) at 43 US Border Patrol check point lanes in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.” The nature of the company’s business – border security data acquisition, commercial vehicle inspection, electronic toll collection and roadway monitoring – means that it’s likely to have a significant amount of sensitive information.

I get from goats, albeit in smaller doses, the same pleasure my family got from that dog. In Goat Song, Brad Kessler describes goats outside the Indian city of Jaisalmer, wandering in herds during the day, searching for grass and shrubs, then splitting up at night, each animal returning to its owner’s home to be milked and fed and bedded. I suspect that the part of us that loves dogs and loves owning goats is itself domestic; we take comfort in knowing we are safe, that we have ensured that our loved ones and our animals are safe and at ease, that everything is perfectly under (our) control.

Conveying emotion through the body in VR
In the emerging XR technologies, both VR and AR creatives are excited for multiplayer communication and community potential, not just for team games, but also for social interaction in shared virtual worlds. Monobanda has a history of creating playful experiences that in which the user interacts with VR environments in different ways, such as projecting objects into the VR world through your voice, shaping environments through collective breathing and even incorporating pain into VR experiences. Opinion by Nicholas Montegriffo
VR has the potential to offer experiences you can’t get any other way

VR adaptions of popular shooter and role-playing games have their place, to be sure, but even if you’re bored with video games as you know them, I’d encourage you to look out for and try new and unknown VR experiences appearing in exhibitions near you.

Maggiore is the artistic madman behind Bug-A-Salt, a $40 “gun” which uses table salt as buckshot to stun or kill bugs, especially flies. A friend suggested Maggiore make a video for Kickstarter to raise money for production. Over the last seven years, sales have grown as Maggiore continued to improve the product (and make more hilarious videos).
