When Nobody Shows Up to My Conference Talk

When Nobody Shows Up to My Conference Talk

You want to stand out – or at the very least be on par – with other talks (as the talks that came prior to yours or are happening at the same time at the multi-track conference). If you give talks at conferences and meetups often enough, you’ll find that you won’t always fill up a room. Here’s a few things that might go through your mind:

…but it’s hard to come to grips with the time, energy, and cost it took to present.

SaBRe: Modular load-time selective binary rewriter

We provide three plugins:

SaBRe execution does not rely on any third-party library. For instance, to run the command under the plugin:

is recommended for compiling SaBRe. The general syntax to invoke SaBRe is:

Both and denote full paths to, respectively, the plugin library and the client program to be run under SaBRe.

Python built-ins worth learning

Python built-ins worth learning

Python refuses to coerce that integer to a string, so we need to manually do it ourselves, using the built-in function (class technically, but as I said, I’ll be calling these all functions):

Do you have user input and need to convert it to a number? It takes an iterable of hashable values (strings, numbers, or other immutable types) and returns a :

There’s no way to make an empty set with the set literal syntax (plain makes a dictionary), so the function is the only way to make an empty set:

Actually that’s a lie because we have this:

But that syntax is confusing (it relies on a lesser-used feature of the operator), so I don’t recommend it. You’ll pretty much see used exclusively in the part of a loop:

There are some other ways to reverse Python lists besides the function:

But the function is usually the best way to reverse any iterable in Python.

Getting my personal data out of Facebook

Getting my personal data out of Facebook

The latest email I received from Facebook confirms that they are with their earlier statement that— and I paraphrase— they cannot give me my data, because the average person is too dumb to understand simple things like their location history . Facebook has a Download Your Information tool, which is part of their aforementioned smoke and mirrors strategy to give people the feeling that they can always obtain their data (and to fake goodwill toward the to make it seem they respect ). However, one of the creative legal geniuses at Facebook came up with this gem:

In other words: you are too stupid to understand your own data, and this includes things like your location and which device you have used when.

The Troubled History of Psychiatry

The Troubled History of Psychiatry

In “Mind Fixers” (Norton), Anne Harrington, a history-of-science professor at Harvard, follows “psychiatry’s troubled search for the biology of mental illness,” deftly tracing a progression of paradigms adopted by neurologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists, as well as patients and their advocates. Proof of a causal relationship between the condition and syphilis came in 1897, and marked the first time, Harrington writes, that “psychiatry had discovered a specific biological cause for a common mental illness.” Neurologists of the time, knowing nothing of brain chemistry, were heavily focussed on what could be observed at autopsy, but there were many mental illnesses that left no trace in the solid tissue of the brain.

Hobbling Huawei: Inside the U.S. war on China’s tech giant

Hobbling Huawei: Inside the U.S. war on China’s tech giant

In late August, the Australians went further: They banned companies that didn’t meet their security requirements, which included Huawei, from supplying any equipment for the country’s 5G network, whether run by the government or by private firms. In November, New Zealand’s intelligence agency blocked the country’s first request by a telecom service provider to use Huawei kit for a 5G network, citing national security concerns. Ian Levy, a British security official who oversees the UK’s review of Huawei equipment, told Reuters the company’s software engineering is like something from 20 years ago.

Two dead after YouTube conspiracy video claims drinking bleach cures autism

Business Insider uncovered a network of YouTube videos promoting Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS), which proponents claim can be used to “cure” conditions from autism, to cancer, to malaria. Humble, and others who promote his substance, all issued vehement defenses of MMS when contacted by Business Insider, and maintain that it is not harmful. Complaints say MMS is linked with dozens of injuries
In Humble’s video, he says his substance is the product of three chemicals:

MMS, or sodium chlorite, which Humble claims he discovered has curative properties.

Fundamentals of Product-Market Fit

Fundamentals of Product-Market Fit

Product/market fit means being in a good market with a product that can satisfy that market.Marc Andreessen*
Early-stage companies likely won’t have reached product-market fit, but the earlier you start thinking about how you plan to reach it, the more confidence investors will have that you’re the right founder to invest in. Understanding product-market fit and its components—products and markets—can be the difference between working for eight years only to discover no one wanted what you were building, and building a company that creates immense value for the world, your employees, your investors, and you. Product-market fit can mean different things to different founders; here’s our definition of the concept:
Product-market fit (product/market fit or PMF) refers to the notion that there is a point at which a given market responds so positively to a company’s product that the product fits the market’s needs.

Integrated Circuits Can Be Easy to Understand with the Right Teachers

Integrated Circuits Can Be Easy to Understand with the Right Teachers

Every once in a while, someone comes up with a learning aid that makes these abstract concepts really easy to understand, and this was the case with one of the booths at Maker Faire Bay Area. The proof for these models was the final showpiece of the exhibit as the artwork of the silicon die was laid out as a circuit board with discrete transistors used to recreate the functionality of the original chip. This was a brilliant concept for an exhibit; it brought together interdisciplinary experts whom I respect and whose work I follow, and sought to invite everyone to gain a better understanding of the secrets hiding in the chips that underpin this technological age.
