Firefox 67: Dark Mode CSS, WebRender, and More

Firefox 67 is available today, bringing a faster and better JavaScript debugger, support for CSS media queries, and the initial debut of WebRender in stable Firefox. For complete information, see:

New in Firefox 67, the media feature allows sites to adapt their styles to match a user’s preference for dark or light color schemes, a choice that’s begun to appear in operating systems like Windows, macOS and Android. We’re working hard to make Firefox Accounts more useful and discoverable this year, starting with a new default icon in the browser toolbar.

Debugging Firmware with GDB

Debugging Firmware with GDB

Here are some of the most useful GDB commands that you can use for debugging your application:

The first command you should be aware of is the help command. For example, let’s run help for the “breakpoint” command:

The Breakpoint command is used to set a breakpoint at a location telling the debugger to halt the application when the program reaches that line of code. Here’s what the output of backtrace looks like when adding the “full” option to show all the local variables as well:

If you want to make it look “pretty” with some basic formatting, you could use the following command:

Here’s a screenshot showing the difference between the output with “pretty” being on or off:

The Step command is used to step through and execute your source code during debugging.

Two women programmers played a pivotal role in the birth of chaos theory

Two women programmers played a pivotal role in the birth of chaos theory

Two years after Hamilton first stepped on campus, Ellen Fetter showed up at MIT in much the same fashion: a recent graduate of Mount Holyoke with a degree in math, seeking any sort of math-related job in the Boston area, eager and able to learn. Later, Sarah studied physical oceanography as a graduate student at MIT, joining the same overarching department as both Lorenz and Rothman, who had arrived a few years earlier. In addition to Hamilton and the woman who coded in MIT’s nuclear engineering department, Ellen Gille recalls a woman on an LGP-30 doing meteorology next door to Lorenz’s group.

The Dark Forest Theory of the Internet

The Dark Forest Theory of the Internet

In response to the ads, the tracking, the trolling, the hype, and other predatory behaviors, we’re retreating to our dark forests of the internet, and away from the mainstream. Compared to the free market communication style of the mass channels — with their high risks, high rewards, and limited moderation — dark forest spaces are more Scandinavian in their values and the social and emotional security they provide. It’s possible, I suppose, that a shift away from the mainstream internet and into the dark forests could permanently limit the mainstream’s influence.

Bullshit I had to go through while organizing a software conference

Bullshit I had to go through while organizing a software conference

We learned how to deal with the unexpected: flights were cancelled, the catering messed up the gluten-free food, the cell phone of one of our speakers went missing during the conference, the audio and video recording of the talks failed and some sponsors paid months after the conference. My team and I were contacted by different people to warn us that they were uncomfortable with the participation of a speaker and her boyfriend in our conference. At around the same time I got a message from an employee of my company who told me that the same person had contacted a speaker of our conference and requested a meeting with him.

Urban-Rural Divide in American Politics

Urban-Rural Divide in American Politics

Urban voters, and the party that has come to represent them, now routinely lose elections and power even when they win more votes. Yes, the Senate gives rural areas (and small states) disproportionate strength. “That’s an obvious problem for Democrats,” Mr. Rodden said.

Technical Debt

Technical Debt

Technical Debt is a metaphor, coined by Ward Cunningham, that frames how to think about dealing with this cruft, thinking of it like a financial debt. The extra effort that it takes to add new features is the interest paid on the debt. What most appeals to me about the debt metaphor is how it frames how I think about how to deal with this cruft.
