Foreign Minister Taro Kono to ask media to switch order of Japanese names

Foreign Minister Taro Kono said Tuesday he plans to ask overseas media outlets to write Japanese names with the family name first, as is customary in the country. Domestic media outlets that have English services should consider it, too,” he said, citing a 2000 report by the education ministry’s National Language Council that said it was desirable to write Japanese names with the family name first in all instances. Education minister Masahiko Shibayama said Tuesday his ministry will also call on other government bodies to use the family name first, though others were apprehensive of such a dramatic change.

Video posted on U.S. Defense contractor Raytheon’s Twitter account, appear to show future laser weapon systems that that can stop enemy hypersonic missiles. Today’s laser weapons can already defeat drones, but cranking out enough photons to fry a ballistic missile would take far more power. A Solution for Loneliness: Get out and volunteer, research suggests

A Solution for Loneliness: Get out and volunteer, research suggests

After starting to volunteer for two or more hours per week, their average level of loneliness subsided to match that of married adults, even after controlling for demographics, baseline health, personality traits, and other social involvement. Participating in volunteer opportunities may help alleviate loneliness and its related health impact for several reasons. After joining a young professionals volunteer group, getting involved with a local nonprofit serving seniors and adults with disabilities, and both organizing and assisting with neighborhood events, I felt my own sense of community and social support increase dramatically.

The bullshit I had to go through while organizing a software conference

The bullshit I had to go through while organizing a software conference

We learned how to deal with the unexpected: flights were cancelled, the catering messed up the gluten-free food, the cell phone of one of our speakers went missing during the conference, the audio and video recording of the talks failed and some sponsors paid months after the conference. My team and I were contacted by different people to warn us that they were uncomfortable with the participation of a speaker and her boyfriend in our conference. At around the same time I got a message from an employee of my company who told me that the same person had contacted a speaker of our conference and requested a meeting with him.

Global sea-level rise could be double our current predictions

Global sea-level rise could be double our current predictions

New predictions: In 2013, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicted that sea levels around the world would rise by between 52 and 98 centimeters by 2100. However, a new study in PNAS by a group of 22 researchers predicts that the real level could exceed two meters, if emissions growth continues along current trends—an outcome they describe as “plausible.” The authors say this is because improved understanding of ice loss has increased the bounds of uncertainty.

Price Fixing: The Legal Argument That Could Destroy Uber

Price Fixing: The Legal Argument That Could Destroy Uber

While the memo itself is not a court ruling with legal authority, it’s yet another influential voice weighing in on a vitally important legal distinction for Uber and other gig economy companies like it. In other words, there’s an argument to be made that Uber is doing the very price-fixing it says drivers can’t do; and the price it fixes is for a service it contends it doesn’t sell.Uber has furthermore argued in legal filings that drivers are, in fact, their customers, because Uber sells drivers an exchange service to help them in turn find their customers, the riders.
