‘There will be conflict’: US has underestimated Huawei, says founder

Ren Zhengfei said his company was fully prepared to face US bans on key components following new trade restrictions caused by Donald Trump’s declaration of a national economic emergency last week

“The current practice of US politicians underestimates our strength,” Ren told Chinese media on Tuesday. Half of chips used in Huawei equipment come from the US and the other half are made by the Chinese company, according to Ren. The Chinese company’s top executive in the UK, Jeremy Thompson, said the US move against Huawei was a “cynically timed” blow in the escalating trade war.

Apple tried to buy Tesla for more than it’s currently worth in 2013, report says

We already know that Elon Musk looked into selling Tesla back in 2013, but I am not sure about this $240 per share price that Apple was apparently willing to pay. In the Elon Musk biography by Ashlee Vance, it was revealed that Musk and Larry Page, the head of Alphabet (Google’s parent company), had a deal for the latter to purchase Tesla:

In the first week of March 2013, Musk reached out to Page, say the two people familiar with the talks. It was during a brief difficult time for Tesla to ramp up Model S production and deliver cars to customers, but things turned for the better and Musk reportedly dropped the deal.

Google Google HTML/CSS style guide suggests omitting head and body tags

All code has to be lowercase: This applies to HTML element names, attributes, attribute values (unless ), CSS selectors, properties, and property values (with the exception of strings). Use valid HTML code unless that is not possible due to otherwise unattainable performance goals regarding file size. Use single ( ) rather than double ( ) quotation marks for attribute selectors and property values.

Building a To-Do List with Cloudflare Workers and KV

Building a To-Do List with Cloudflare Workers and KV

In this tutorial, we’ll build a todo list application in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, with a twist: all the data should be stored inside of the newly-launched Workers KV, and the application itself should be served directly from Cloudflare’s edge network, using Cloudflare Workers. The function will take in an argument, , which will populate the variable in the above code sample:

In , we can use the retrieved KV data to call the function, and generate a based on it:

The finished product looks something like this:

At this point, we’ve built a Cloudflare Worker that takes data from Cloudflare KV and renders a static page based on it. Instead, let’s just update the list of todos locally, by taking our original code for rendering the todo list, making it a re-usable function called , and calling it when the page loads and when the cache request has finished:

With the client-side code in place, deploying the new Worker should put all these pieces together.

Why Workers Without College Degrees Are Fleeing Big Cities

Why Workers Without College Degrees Are Fleeing Big Cities

Not only did those at the bottom of the wage scale — janitors, cashiers at 7-Eleven — make more money in dense urban centers, but these places also offered data entry, bookkeeping and other jobs that paid middle-class wages while requiring little or no college experience. Research by Peter Ganong from the University of Chicago and Daniel Shoag of Harvard suggests that housing costs are a principal driver of the change in migration decisions: As the highly educated have flocked to superstar cities, they have pushed housing prices way beyond the reach of people earning less. In 1960, housing absorbed 17 percent of a janitor’s household earnings in King County, compared with 9 percent of a lawyer’s, according to data from Mr. Ganong.

Car Owners Should Control Data Collected by Cars

Car Owners Should Control Data Collected by Cars

Carmakers use data to alert us when something needs repair or when our cars need to be taken in for service. It’s alarmingly easy to imagine carmakers’ charging fees to independent repair shops that need access to vehicle data to service a vehicle purchased for tens of thousands of dollars. There are more than 180,000 independent repair shops across the country; most have all the tools needed to work on today’s connected and complex cars, and most of today’s highly trained service technicians can perform anything from basic tuneups to sophisticated electronic diagnostics.

The Lavish Roman Banquet: A Calculated Display Of Debauchery And Power

The Lavish Roman Banquet: A Calculated Display Of Debauchery And Power

Even before there were emperors, members of the Roman elite held private banquets as a way to show off, network, reward friends and diss enemies.” The Roman banquet evokes voluptuary images of men in togas reclining on couches and glutting themselves on wild sow’s udders and stuffed snails, while servants stream in bearing platters heaped with heavily sauced and delicately spiced foods from all over the world: ostrich from Africa, pepper and sugar cane from India, cumin from Ethiopia, sumac from Syria, olives from Greece, and that perennial Roman favorite, the fleshy homegrown fig. The most legendary Roman banquet, says Strauss, is the fictional Cena Trimalchionis (Dinner of Trimalchio) in Petronius’ satirical novel, Satyricon.

Free Wolfram Engine for Developers

But then I’ll ask them, “So, are you using Wolfram Language and its computational intelligence in your production software system?” The Free Wolfram Engine for Developers implements the full Wolfram Language as a software component that can immediately be plugged into any standard software engineering stack. The goal of the Free Wolfram Engine for Developers is to make it easy for anyone to use the Wolfram Language in any software development project—and to build systems that take advantage of its computational intelligence.
