Graphics Team ships WebRender MVP

This release of Firefox 67 will see us roll-out WebRender to users running Windows 10 on desktop machines with NVIDIA graphics cards. We have spent the past several months putting WebRender through its paces in Nightly and Beta and even conducted an experiment in  the Firefox 66 release to help uncover any potential bugs and issues we might face. That said, during our experiments in Nightly and Beta, we’ve observed that users with WebRender experience less jank, and that a number of website performance problems disappear.

Self-driving trucks begin mail delivery test for U.S. Postal Service

Self-driving trucks begin mail delivery test for U.S. Postal Service

(Reuters) – The U.S. Postal Service on Tuesday started a two-week test transporting mail across three Southwestern states using self-driving trucks, a step forward in the effort to commercialize autonomous vehicle technology for hauling freight. San Diego-based startup TuSimple said its self-driving trucks will begin hauling mail between USPS facilities in Phoenix and Dallas to see how the nascent technology might improve delivery times and costs. TuSimple’s tie-up with the USPS marks an achievement for the fledgling self-driving truck industry, and follows Swedish company Einride’s entry into freight delivery using driverless electric trucks on a public road, announced last week.

Show HN: Turn an Excel file into a web application

Show HN: Turn an Excel file into a web application

So the admin lady sent me her Buy-Currency Excel file: on the first screen, she expects to see a selected list of countries and their currency, and the currency data should be populated automatically. Also, to let her concentrate on the application, I decided to show a proper area instead of showing her the whole sheet (16,384 columns and 1,048,576 rows) so the lady won’t scroll to the end of the world (sheet):

But hiding toolbar and the context menu is not enough because users can still edit cells arbitrarily. After the lady places an order for many times, she may wish to filter some rows according to the criteria, e.g. list only the EUR to USD transactions:

Even if a filter was not enabled in the Excel file, I can enable the filter programmatically through Keikai API: setAutoFilter()

The whole usage is like:

I hope she will appreciate this little arrangement I made.

Microsoft Edge preview builds for macOS

Microsoft Edge preview builds for macOS

You can now install preview builds from the Microsoft Edge Insider site for your macOS or Windows 10 PC, with more Windows version support coming soon. The new Microsoft Edge preview builds for macOS are available through preview channels that we call “Microsoft Edge Insider Channels.” For the first time, web developers can now test sites and web apps in Microsoft Edge on macOS and be confident that those experiences will work the same in the next version of Microsoft Edge across all platforms.

Saying goodbye to App Review Times

Saying goodbye to App Review Times

So, in early 2011 I created a site which crowdsourced App Store review time data from Twitter. Of course, there are always exceptions in the review process and any apps that legitimately required extra time in review would skew the data, but by using a truncated mean, and with more good data coming in than bad the averages turned out to be really accurate. ♂️ That isn’t why I’m shutting it down though, something else happened…

In 2016 Phil Schiller took over the App Store group inside Apple and pretty quickly review times reduced from weeks to “about a day” across all of the stores and review times have now been consistent for about three years.

I don’t know how CPUs work so I simulated one in code

I don’t know how CPUs work so I simulated one in code

by J. Clark Scott, a book which describes the bits of a simple 8-bit computer from the NAND gates, through to the registers, RAM, bits of the CPU, ALU and I/O, I got a hankering to implement it in code. The only thing that’s different about my computer is I upgraded it to 16-bit to have more memory to play with, as storing even just the glyphs for the ASCII table would have dwarfed most of the 8-bit machine described in the book, with not much room left for useful code. Well, until the book discussed the I/O features, with designs for a simple keyboard and display interface so you can get things in and out of the machine.

Tesla’s Touchscreen UI: A Case Study of Car-Dashboard User Interface

Tesla’s Touchscreen UI: A Case Study of Car-Dashboard User Interface

While this is a big screen (three times the area of an iPad), it can’t show everything — so,   making matters even more complicated, in Version 9 of Tesla’s operating system, some features are placed inside an expandable menu. Having the controls at the bottom of the screen also means more time for the eyes to move from the windshield to the menu area, and also less of a chance that people will be able to use their peripheral vision to attend to unexpected stimuli that appear on the road when they are busy interacting with (and looking at) the touchscreen. The rear-view camera (an essential feature in a car whose rear-windshield view is partially blocked by the backseat headrests) is available under the arrow menu, as is the cell phone.

Facebook and Google pressured EU experts to soften fake news regulations

Divina Frau-Meigs, who teaches media sociology at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris and was also a member of the expert group, stresses the integrity of the academics in the group, who she believes were working honestly and diligently. However, she still found the financial relationship between the platforms and some other group members troublesome: “It’s a very subtle dependency relationship: it is difficult to focus on the platform that supports you, even without strings attached. The fact that platforms support both academics and journalists is in itself not a problem for Frau-Meigs as long as it is transparent, but the lack of clear criteria and a separate funding entity is.

Huawei case prompts F/OSS reconsideration (German)
