Creating and Using a Custom Linux Kernel on Guix System

Creating and Using a Custom Linux Kernel on Guix System

The official kernel configuration, as is the case with many GNU/Linux distributions, errs on the side of inclusiveness, and this is really what causes the build to take such a long time when I build the package for myself. Linux-Libre is just like other regular packages and can be inherited and overridden like any other:

In the same directory as the file defining is a file named , which is an actual kernel configuration file. I left the defconfig keyword of blank, so the only kernel configuration in the package is the one which I included as a native-input.

Average App Store Review Times Shutdown

Average App Store Review Times Shutdown

From March 2011 until March 2019 this site aggregated and averaged crowdsourced data on the length of time that app review for the iOS and Mac App Store took. From the very start of the App Store, until May 2016 the length of an app review was often very lengthy, causing problems for developers trying to schedule releases or set the expectations of their clients. This site was set up to track average review times so that developers could plan their releases with a little more confidence.

How to do hard things

How to do hard things

This is a system I only somewhat tongue in cheek refer to as “The Fully General System For Learning To Do Hard Things”. I don’t always explicitly follow it, but I often find that when I’ve succeeded my success comes from implicitly following it, and almost every time someone asks me for advice on learning to do things I just describe a specialised version of the system to them. When you know what success looks like but cannot currently achieve it, the system works as follows:

The reason this works much better than just practicing the hard thing is because it gives you a much more direct feedback loop.

Minimum pay at Basecamp is now $70k

Minimum pay at Basecamp is now $70k

We pay at the top 10% of San Francisco market rates for salary + bonus (but not stock options) at Basecamp. For programmers, designers, operations, administration, and the vast majority of other roles at Basecamp, simply following the top of the market rates is a pretty sweet deal: High salaries, benchmarked against the top market, yet most people live in places with far lower cost of living, which means we’re even more competitive in local markets. While the rates there for programmers and designers are far higher than many other places, this is a lot less true for, say, customer support or other roles that hasn’t seen the same market competition.

Paranoia will destroy us: Why Huawei and other Chinese tech is not spying

US telecom firms would indeed be putting government contracts in jeopardy by doing further business with the Chinese firm, so Huawei mobile devices are currently unobtainable from a major US carrier. The verbiage of the proposed bill claims that, according to our security agencies, Huawei and ZTE have shared sensitive information with China, and that Chinese security agencies can access private US business communications using Huawei and ZTE’s equipment. Turn an Excel file into a web application

Turn an Excel file into a web application

So the admin lady sent me her Buy-Currency Excel file: on the first screen, she expects to see a selected list of countries and their currency, and the currency data should be populated automatically. Also, to let her concentrate on the application, I decided to show a proper area instead of showing her the whole sheet (16,384 columns and 1,048,576 rows) so the lady won’t scroll to the end of the world (sheet):

But hiding toolbar and the context menu is not enough because users can still edit cells arbitrarily. After the lady places an order for many times, she may wish to filter some rows according to the criteria, e.g. list only the EUR to USD transactions:

Even if a filter was not enabled in the Excel file, I can enable the filter programmatically through Keikai API: setAutoFilter()

The whole usage is like:

I hope she will appreciate this little arrangement I made.

Niki Lauda has died

Niki Lauda has died

The former Formula One driver and three-time world champion Niki Lauda has died at the age of 70, his family has said. Lauda, who won titles in 1975, 1977 and 1984, was hugely admired, respected and liked within F1 after a remarkable career during which he won two titles for Ferrari and one for McLaren and came back from an horrific accident that left him severely burned and injured in 1976. Jenson Button, the former world champion, said “a legend has left us” while prominent motorsports journalist Nick De Groot said Lauda’s status within the sport was “not just for what he achieved on the race track, but for what he overcame to get there”

Scuderia Ferrari tweeted in Italian that the Ferrari family had learned “with deep sadness” of Lauda’s death.
