Six Paths to the Nonsurgical Future of Brain-Machine Interfaces

These wearable interfaces could ultimately enable diverse national security applications such as control of active cyber defense systems and swarms of unmanned aerial vehicles, or teaming with computer systems to multitask during complex missions. “DARPA is preparing for a future in which a combination of unmanned systems, artificial intelligence, and cyber operations may cause conflicts to play out on timelines that are too short for humans to effectively manage with current technology alone,” said Al Emondi, the N3 program manager. “If N3 is successful, we’ll end up with wearable neural interface systems that can communicate with the brain from a range of just a few millimeters, moving neurotechnology beyond the clinic and into practical use for national security,” Emondi said.

My Product Is Unexpectedly Being Used to Help People with Dementia

My mother was DELIGHTED beyond words when she received her 1st packet of NanaGram photos. My brother and I originally built NanaGram as a gift for our grandfather when he turned 94, but looking back on the past year it was my grandmother who benefited from the regular photo deliveries most. This worked fine when my grandmother was in an assisted living facility, but whenever she went to the hospital and later was in rotation at various hands-on nursing homes, I couldn’t really ship the photos easily.

Employing QUIC Protocol to Optimize Uber’s App Performance

Employing QUIC Protocol to Optimize Uber’s App Performance

Unfortunately, the HTTP/2 stack fares poorly in dynamic, lossy wireless networks, and we learned that poor performance can often be traced directly to Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) implementations buried in OS kernels. In this article, we share our experiences optimizing TCP performance for Uber’s apps by moving to a network stack that supports the QUIC protocol. This can be attributed to the inefficient computation of RTOs, TCP’s inability to react quickly to loss of last few packets in a window (tail loss), and inefficiencies in the congestion control algorithm, which does not differentiate between wireless losses and losses due to network congestion.

Containers, Microservices, and Service Meshes

Containers, Microservices, and Service Meshes

I will talk about the dotCloud platform, a platform that was built on 100+ microservices and which supported thousands of production applications running in containers; I will explain the challenges that were faced when building and running it; and how service meshes would (or wouldn’t) have helped. If you don’t want to dive into my previous blog post about dotCloud, all you need to know is that it was a PaaS allowing customers to run a wide range of applications (Java, PHP, Python…) supported by a wide range of data services (MongoDB, MySQL, Redis…) and with a workflow similar to the one of Heroku: you would push your code to the platform, the platform would build container images, and deploy these container images. As for the HTTP routing mesh, later versions provided detailed HTTP metrics, showing error codes and response times; but modern service meshes go above and beyond, and provide integration with metrics collection systems like Prometheus, for instance.

Ernest Hemingway’s magazine expenses claim

Ernest Hemingway’s magazine expenses claim

Dahl responded that Hemingway should include the scene in his next piece for Collier’s, the New York magazine he wrote for at the time. Hemingway knew the magazine because his third wife, Martha Gellhorn, had covered conflicts for Collier’s in Spain, London, Finland, and China. On October 7, Collier’s updated its masthead to show Hemingway was its correspondent in France and Gellhorn in Italy.

Wide Color Photos Are Coming to Android

Wide Color Photos Are Coming to Android

This means when given images, the application always checks the color space and does conversion based on its capability of showing wide color gamut, and thus even if the application can’t handle wide color gamut it can still show the sRGB color gamut of the image correctly without color distortion. A wide color gamut capable application implies when given wide color gamut images, it can show the colors outside of sRGB color space. If your application doesn’t adopt wide color gamut, you are very likely to just want to decode every image to sRGB color space.
